I believe EMPI axles are new, made in China.
Someone correct me if I am wrong (he said, scouring ebay for OEM Lobros)
'91 Jetta 1.6 NA, '82 Caddy 1.6NA, '81 Cabriolet,  4 Mercedes OM616/617s , 2 Triumphs and a Citroen DS19 in a pear tree.

And the part we got was a 100mm axle, not a 90mm one.  Which we didn't
notice until we had already packed it full of grease   :P

Was it mid year 1990 that VW changed flange sizes?  Anyone know what the
stock flange size was for a  Canuck 1990 1.6?

Should be 90mm all the way through mk2 Diesel.
They musta clicked on wrong menu option and got you a gasser application. imho

EMPI CVs / driveshafts have the exactly the same quality rep online as a certain North Carolina purveyor of discount VW parts...for a lot of the same reasons.

I believe EMPI axles are new, made in China.

 ;D ;D ;D

Still doesn't explain why it blew up... and I have an experimental set of EMPI axles on one of my cars that's doing fine after 50K with a very aggressive pump and turbo.

Yes Vince, it does not explain why it came apart...
the driver was very persistant that "that shaft is for your reverse gear. its supposed to have play in it"
i just stared at him at that point in disbelief at what he was actually saying and called a cab & GTFO of there before i started breaking stuff.
A billion thanks to commuter boy for saving my bacon! Kokanee Gold en-route ;)

such a crappy week.
now im looking for a fender to replace the one the wheel destroyed when it  came off and i've got to go back to curtis tire. They sold me 8 bolts of the length i needed and 8 that were shorter but longer than the ones i have now...
thankfully i haven't used them and can return them tomorrow.
but i mean... still the number of times i've been given the wrong stuff is just infuriating. The only place that has been spot on consistantly is Lordco and the 0nline sites.

Took a look at it and the driveshaft was spinning freely.  Not good.

Jacked it up, pulled the inner CV joint and the whole assembly just
rolled out.  Balls, circlip, cage, etc.  Noticeable wear inside, odd
because they were fairly new.

And the part we got was a 100mm axle, not a 90mm one.  Which we didn't
notice until we had already packed it full of grease   :P

To my knowledge all oil burners run 90mm inner joints till 93 m.y. gassers run 100mm inner C.V. joints from 89 m.y. forward, I believe.

In Can, I can't speak for the US, I had an 86 TD that had 100mm joints, but I own a 90 NA that has 90mm joints.  If it was originally an NA diesel trans it will likely be 90mm.  All gassers after 85' have 100mm (basically MK2).  I'm 90% sure all MK3 have 100mm as my MK3 (that was 1.8 gasser) was 100mm and I'm pretty sure that's the least powerful car of Mk3's.
99' 1.9 1Z Tdi, hybrid pump -1.9 housing & rover internals, 2052 wastegate turbo,.25 hflox nozzles, SDI intake, CTN tranny
96' 1.6 TD Golf, Giles pump, VNT 17, Gas changed to Diesel, Air to Water Int.

Which side is wrecked? if it's the left, good luck finding one, if it's the right I've got a few of them.

(edited for backwardness.)

I fixed it on Tuesday with Commuter Boy.
it was the driver side.
You can get left or right axles for under $140 at just about any VAG retailer/outlet.
MOPAC sells EMPI ones for quite cheap.
