1.6TD cam shaft on AAZ
« on: August 12, 2010, 09:47:10 am »
I just realized i still have my 1.6TD cam on my now full 1.9 AAZ.
It runs quite frankly like crap  compared to the AAZ head on the 1.6 bottom end.
I was wondering if the 1600cc cam has anything to do with this?  are both cams totally identical? I know they are identical in length, sprocket nose and bearing journals. I'm also using the 1.6td pump and all the appropriate brackets.

What made me think of this was seeing Vince Waldon's post in another thread dipicting two valves being depressed at TDC and i don't remember mine to have that much lift anywhere at TDC.  Reason being, I could turn the crank 360 degrees without the belt on with no valve to piston contact.

by "run like crap" i mean it's really easy to stall when taking off in 1st and it will pull allright and then sort of stop halfway through the rpm band, the EGT's rise and it kind of slugs a bit. I'm a little disappointed in how much slower this engine SEEMS compared to the smaller one with the big head on it.
It smokes really white too (diesel white, stings and stinks) on cold starts. by cold i mean 20C... so not really cold at all.
Two injectors, one especially, leak like CRAZY. To the point where there are two constant drips off the oil pan while it's running.

If the thought here is to change the cam I think you will be disappointed with the outcome.  It sounds like you have many other issues to address based on some of your other posts.  One of which sounds like pump timing.

This be true :(
my timing was to start it and advance the timing with the cold start out until it stopped smoking really badly but before it sounded like mables in a tin can. Which ... worked fine for my last engine ...

First, fix the fuel leaks.

Second, unhook the LDA. Turn the fuel up until you get smoke at 0 boost, full pedal then back it off a bit. Hook your LDA up and adjust it accordingly.

AAZ cams are a fair bit different then 1.6 cams. I posted a graph showing the 2 a couple months ago. I doubt it is your problem though.
