Frame Horn Stripped
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:39:42 pm »
Back again after a long absence and have a question re my new-to-me '84 td Rabbit.

I had to change the driver side cv and axle and noticed the a-arm rattling around in its mount. After the axle install I went to put the rattly bolt back in and couldn't catch a thread. So the frame horn is stripped, right? Can I tap & die it? How much material do I have to work with in there?

If anyone has any experience with this repair I would appreciate the input.

Thanks

The bentley gaves a fairly good explanation on how to fix that. Cut the horn open, knock off the nut, weld a new one on and then "back then" you could buy the patch to fix the hole, IDK about now though.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

how bad was the bolt? Could it have been the bolt didn't have good threads? I would at least try tapping the frame horn and gettting a new bolt to see if it works.

What? I spent ages searching online and all I had to do was read ahead a little?! I'll remember that lesson. And I'll go read up on it right now.

The bolt looks like it is in great shape and almost slides right in. I think if I tap it I will have to go one size up. But now that you mentioned it I will go take a closer look before I do anything.

Thanks for the replies folks, eager to get this unexpected repair out of the way so I can move on to the ones I already knew about.

Come to think of it, a few years ago I was rebushing the control arms and when I went to put the bolt back in I sorta cross threaded it...... :-[. I wasn't thinking and tried using the air impact to start the bolt, I didn't try very long but after that I couldn't even start the bolt right so I ran a tap through it and that fixed it.
