Clacky diesel Clacks too loud?

So I had the car in the shop today getting the fuel pump timed and my mechanic says the car is clacking louder then he would like to hear. He said he checked the injectors to make sure it is not air going in the lines and the timing and fuel pump are in spec now. What else would cause it to clack very loud. It only seems to be at idle and when I press the accelerator down. When I coast downhill it's nice and smooth with no clack.
I'm hoping it is nothing serious and I'm hoping it may clear up slowly overtime (car only has a little over 600km on a fresh rebuild)
And it's a 1.9TD.

Mine was the same way, smokes way too much and was loud
New head / valves/cam and it's quiet as a TDI
reduced smoke 80 %

I guess the obvious question would be: what timing setting where they using?!

What do you mean by settings? As in how far advance or retarded he made it? I believe he told me .98, but i can't remember if he said advance or retard.

is it possible it could also be piston slap? Seeing as it only has a little over 600km could it be the rings are still seating? i should hope they are fine by now but i guess anything is possible.

What is the opening pressures on the injectors? If they are on the higher end of the scale I find it clacks more. New nozzles clack more in general as well. I think it is because the atomization is very fine and the combustion happens faster/earlier.

injectors were rebuilt and calibrated by Giles to I believe 155bar.
Anyway I got the car back today and it is waaaaay quieter then when I dropped it off. No more clack then a TD should have with minimal sound deadening. I'm so happy with this car!
All is good.

Mine is still super loud. I bought new lifters... going to see if that solves anything. Next will be injectors i guess ... unless the car gets sold for scrap.

Well that's it, now someone must develop a clack-O-meter.
Wonder if an SPL gauge would work?
These goofy things, some just clack more than others. I've heard fuel change it, additives deff will.
Hell almost any variable you can think of with em will have an audible component. I just turn up the radio unless there is another symptom along with it, smoke, bad mpg, etc.

Yup, you got it. "Too much" clacking generally relates to "too much" advance (due to pump timing, injector pop pressures, fuel composition, etc)... the challenging phrase being "too much". ;-)
All diesels have *some* clack (it's one of the things we love about 'em, right) since there's generally always *some* advance.
