2 questions
« on: July 28, 2010, 11:48:40 pm »
1. Should I replace all my con rod bolts if they were torqued but the engine never ran?

2. There is some rust on my cylinder walls after honing. Should I be worried about that?

I have reused quite a few in stock applications.

Rust-if it wipes off with wd 40 and a rag, no problem.

So the con rod bolts will be fine? I wasn't sure because I heard they weren't to be reused. they were torqued to spec about 3 years ago but were never ran.

The engine designer/manufacturer says they are a one-time-use bolt.  If you've torqued em and then loosened them they're done... regardless of whether the engine ran or not.   ;)

Being a conservative engineer-type, my answer is to agree with the much smarter brains in Germany... I use 'em once, and then pitch 'em.... for the few bucks it costs me.

On the other hand, many folks reuse 'em and never have any issues.   There's no real answer here other than your own comfort level... which is different for everyone.

I swear I read in the bentley that some of the first 1.6 and 1.5 had reusable con rod bolts. The later though for sure did not. ARP for around 100.00 is the cheapest as you can reuse them. At least you can reuse them until the stretch is too much which should take a lot.

What do the stock bolts sell for from the dealer?

Are the Con Rod bolts a place worth going to the more expensive ARP type bolts? I know the head bolts are a known weakness and worthwhile to replace, but are the con rod bolts typically stressed beyond stock bolts on these motors?

Which engine is this? You will be able to find ARP bolts for the1.6L, but I was unable to get a part # for the AAZ when I did mine. The con rod bolts on the AAZ go through the cap and actually thread into the rod itself. Is not a separate nut and stud like ARP will try and sell you if you call. I had a number of frustrating correspondences with them trying to figure it out.

If you have the 1.6L I guess it depends on how hard you will be pushing the engine, and what gives you peace of mind, and of course the depth of you pockets.

its a 91 mf turbo diesel. So I went to the local dealer and they want to charge me $12 a con rod bolt. Is that right or are they trying to screw me cuz arp is essentially that price?! The nuts are reusable right?

I just got mine from the dealer. Next time I remove the rods I will get ARP's cuz my bum is still tender from the dealer.
