I am trying to sufficiently tighten the 9mm 12-point bolts that hold the flywheel to the pressure plate.

If I read my Bentley right (page 38) I am supposed to use thread-locker and tighen them to 74 lb-ft. Is this correct?

The reason I ask is I just snapped one off while trying to tighten it...and I had only gotten to about 70 lb-ft.

Thanks for the help...by the way, the replacement crank is in...and I am cruising on putting the parts back on to get this thing running...hopefully in the next couple of days depending on free time (what is that?)

That sounds like waaay too much to me.  My Bentley manual, for an '77-'84 Rabbit/Jetta Diesel, specifies 15 ft-lbs for the flywheel to pressure plate bolts (and no lock-tite required.)

The Pressure plate to crankshaft bolts get 45 ft-lbs, and you use Loctite 270 or 271 on the threads.  These torque specs can be found on page 72, at the end of section "Engine and Clutch".

Thanks Jake....I thought that was way too much for such a small bolt.

I torqued the p-plate to crankshaft bolts to spec....and they came with locktite pre-installed.

Mike, I hope you didn't torque the new style shouldered pressure plate bolts to either 45 lb-ft (too low!) or 74 lb-ft.  The correct procedure for these bolts is 25 lb-ft plus 90 degrees.

I suppose these are one time use only also huh?

They're supposed to be according to the later Bentleys - however, I've known lots who clean them up and reuse them with new threadlocker.  I have resuded them on occasion myself, but generally buy new ones.

I tightened them properly....they're ready to roll....

I am now swapping out the seals and gaskets so I can get the whole thing back together.

I need to clean up and repaint the tranny while I have it out...and swap out the fluid with new good stuff.

I thought about pulling the whole block (especially after seeing some really nicely painted blocks) and painting it and getting it ready for as much show as I hope to get some go from it.
