Converting 1992 1.6 TD with A/C to serpentine belt drive?
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:16:09 am »
I love my Jetta TD. I love my A/C. ;D I hate the alternator belt setup. >:( It's a terrible design. Tightening the belt reduces the wrap angle around the alternator pulley, dooming the belt to an endless cycle of tightening to failure. I tried -- with mixed success -- a reversed idler pulley that pushes rather than pulls on the belt for tightening. I installed a new alternator pulley. No improvement. I've heard of serpentine conversions for our cars but don't know where to get them. I've also heard you can use the A/C setup and pulleys off a 1.9 AAZ. Is that true? Anybody here done a serpentine conversion on a 1.6 with A/C. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
