« on: July 20, 2010, 01:08:51 am »
Hi guys

Iam wanting to raise the gearing
EG: 5Th gear upgrade in my VW T4 2001 1.9TD
shes had most the power increases you can do so she as plenty of power a 1.9TD can have

do any of you guys have parts numbers regarding this
i believe the most would change the ratio to 0.681 but i think 0.658 is available to getting the rpm down more, any advice / help on this would be great.
thanks Rick

I don't know about the gearing on a 02A, I have an 020 tranny with a .71 fifth and at about 3000 rpm I'm easily doing 125 km or 78-79 mph. (96' 020 tranny).
99' 1.9 1Z Tdi, hybrid pump -1.9 housing & rover internals, 2052 wastegate turbo,.25 hflox nozzles, SDI intake, CTN tranny
96' 1.6 TD Golf, Giles pump, VNT 17, Gas changed to Diesel, Air to Water Int.

pretty sure the T4s use an air cooled style trans.. or like the audi's had.. and they all use real low final drives, like 4.25:1 or something like that iirc..

He is driving what we know as a Eurovan, so FWD. Basically a 02A trans

VW T4 "Transporter" 1.9TD 2001   AKA   "Euro Van"

My gear box code is

DQL 06060
14         3

02B 409 3.20 D

these codes read how ive written them
when iam driving in 5Th at 61/62 mph its revving at 3000 rpm
at 70 mph its revving at 3400 rpm so shes a screamer,,there's a few different ratios that can be fitted the rave what most folk fit is 0.68:1 but i think you can get 0.65:1

If want to be sure ,do some home work on Vag-cat and compare differentials that use the 02A transmission.

cheers buddy for the advice,,vagcat is know longer available over here  :(

i used it all the time as well,,,,yeah the T4 diff is very low geared & most the vw range have the same 1/2/3/4 gear ratios as the T4 its the diff thats massively low geared equaling the difference between the cars V T4 vans/caravelles,,i could put a diff from a G60 in but it means i will have the van off the road wihile removing the gear box & letting a gear box specialist do the diff side of it,most lads on the T4forum use the 5Th gear from the Mk 3 golf tdi in there T4"s but ive heard there's a even heigher ratio 5Th & to be honest i do really think my 1.9TD will pull that ratio due to the PP mods ive done AKA "Project power" plus once funds allow i will be using the golf TDI motor/loom/ECU  in a popular conversion that quite a few guys have done over here with great success due to them been more tunable with 90 bhp as standard & the fact you can get a decent "Safe" 140 bhp / 220 ft bl of them  ;)
