Newer MK3 tach issues
« on: July 14, 2010, 02:03:15 pm »
I just wanted to mention a few things as I've just converted a 92 1.6TD into a 96, MK3 gasser golf.  I basically disconnected the ecu from any functions it would normally do, the large plug at the side of the engine only has the wires connected to the oil sensors, quite similar to a MK2.  The coil can be disconnected and the hot 12V in the plug (that went to the coil) can be used to run to the injector stop selenoid (as it's the only one thats hot both at start and on with the ignition that's easy to wire).

I used a dakota digital unit to wire the tach with the alternator and it easy to adjust up or down if needed.  It's relatively easy to wire, 12v Ground, alternator wire and it has several outputs for what the tach may need (4 outputs I think)

The only other thing I wanted to mention I have an air to water intercooller from frozenboost (smallest one) and a 2 gal reservoir with the rad mounted at the back of the car.  I drove it on a +29°C (87°F or so) and no problems with heating.  Even the exchanger in the engine compartment was okay to touch after running it for about 45 minutes.

Good stuff!

What did you do for the radiator for your intercooler?  Does your car have AC?

The kit comes with a radiator that is essentially a large oil cooler.  I was going to put it in front of the car rad but I didn't want to have extra heat in front of the car radiator as the vw radiators are not overly large to begin with.  So I ended up running lines to the back of the car.  the reservoir, pump, and radiator are at the back.  the reservoir is in the hatch (golf car) and the pump and reservoir are behind the back bumper.
