what does the top of an mk1 tank look like?
« on: July 11, 2010, 09:17:07 am »
I filled my tank to the brim the other day (first time in my ownership it has gottin more than half a tank at a time lol) and when i backed in to a friends driveway the car sat at about a 30 degree frontwards angle.. there was a noticeable fuel leak that had dripped all down the passenger side around the fuel lines area.. but it was wet above them so i did not suspect the lines them selves. Plus now that I have driven the tank down to around 3/8 of a tank the leak has ceased and is no longer apparent..

However.. what does the top of tank look like? is there anything up there to leak? Possibly the top inspction hatch thing? I have no idea.

Might need a new one or expereiment with how much fuel it takes to leak.. lol

TIA! ;)

The very top has the hole for the fuel sender, the seal could just be dry .

Problem is taking those tanks out. You have to lower the rear axle at the front pivot housing. If the car is rusty, and particularly a 30 year old Canadian winter driven one, be real real careful. Those bolts will probably break off. THEN comes the swearing. never mind actually then dealing with the tank itself. I would be prepared to buy a new one . It's a good chance it's rotten.. Oh also buy 2 new brake hoses. Much easier to cut them than try to remove the fittings . There's so little room it's ridiculous. In my head I still  gauge how bad a job that i'm about to do in comparison of how much harder it would be than to remove a rabbit tank even though i haven't done one in 18 [?]  years. I'd say start soaking the whole back of the car with penetrating oil now, every day for the next week or until you're ready to do it.

There are a couple vents on the top of the tank on that side.
one is the standard tank vent, the other is larger and vents to the filler,
Sometimes the plastic lines shrink away from the barbs.

Clean it up and try to receate it.
Might just need a hose shoved back on.

I'm going to go on a limb with this one...Would it happen to look like the top of a gas tank?

LOL
I would take the seat out and look to see if the seal is toast. The access pannel should come out easy and then just fill it up and see where it is comming from. LOADS easier than dropping the tank and you may get lucky.
