A few questions about problems in my build
« on: July 09, 2010, 06:45:53 am »
The 100mm CV work in the MKII but the driver CV boot rubs the tie bar that runs from a arm to a arm... I didn't notice it on the 90mm is it critical or do I remove the tie bar?
Is the blanket under the hood good for anything or should I remove it? It seems like 35 pounds of uselessness to me, but I figure they put it there for something.
What is the general procedure for break in? Sounds like once it is up to temp take off and vary your RPMs like crazy. Being a TD you would want to boost right? Not floored all the time, but you would want to bring boost on slowly and close to your expected peak boost? These are theories, but I am posing it as questions so I can get answers. I am finishing body work and hopefully painting today so engine is next :D

I would leave the mat in place. Mine weighs less then 2 lbs and does a good job of shushing the engine.

I would say the rubbing CV boot is critical. Do you have something mounted wrong?

I never touched the tie bar and the I just slipped the CV into the knuckle. It doesn't rub on the passenger side but it does on the drivers.

The mat just looks pretty rough and heavy. If it is only 2 pounds then I will probably not worry about it.

What about the rest?

Does it touch when the suspension is in it's operating position?

Good question. I have a jack under the rear right now doing bondo to remove the plastic inserts on the fenders. It might not. Plus the engine is empty and I don't have the front completely on so some more weight might help huh. I will look into it later then...but

What about break in procedure? I know I am going to get it warm and change the oil and filter. Then off and running?

my underhood blanker weighed about 15 lbs. took it off because it was hanging off the hood pretty much.

Mk1 blankets weigh a lot more than mk2's - for whatever reason.
An oil/grease soaked one could make more weight still.
I "shampoo'd" an mk1 blanket recently. Wet it weighed about 50 pounds. Dry probably at least 10 pounds.

I've noticed they make a tremendous difference, definitely worth whatever the weight. But if it were nasty or ragged beyond recourse - i'd leave it off and try to find another one.

I've got an 85 TD Jetta owners manual if you want me to get it out and email you pix of what it says about break-in ?

I sort of think i'd do break-in without turbo plugged up, NA style.
At least first 100 miles. But i'm cautious on stuff until its proven to be as expected.
Some folks do it just the opposite. It goes or it blows.
Judgement call - your moneys.
Probably wasn't on the cheap either.

it goes or it blows... make sure it runs good and idles well and cooling system operates, then drive it around easy for maybe 100 miles. then give it hell. gotta know that the engine is gonna take whatever you can throw at it. and running it good will seat the rings faster. you gotta use all of your engines revs. i dont mean just run it to the governor, but a few spirited blasts down the road and stuff like that are fine. if its gonna break, i want it to break right now, not on my trip somewhere, 300 miles from the nearest trailer...
