Engine Removal HELP! (Audi 5000 TD)
« on: July 08, 2010, 09:54:44 pm »
Hi, short story is that I'm pulling out a seized block from a good body. The problem is that with the automatic you're supposed to unbolt the torque converter before pulling the engine. Well that's impossible with a seized engine. The pilot shaft (as it i think it's called) is coming with the engine when I pull it away from the transmission. Would anyone  have any suggestions as to what I should do? I really don't want to pull the transmission as well.

Thanks!

This probably won't help, but a few years ago I removed a 5000 TD engine and didn't realize that I needed to remove the 3 bolts on the torque converter.  I was able to do this because I used a Kubota to actually lift the engine out of the car.  Anyway, are you sure there's no way to turn the engine over with a huge breaker bar or something?  Maybe loosen/remove the main bearing caps to loosen up the crank?

just pull it straight out of the trans with the converter still attached. it only has to come out of the trans about 4 inches or so. then take the TC off with the engine in the car.

how did you end up doing it? freeing up the engine? or pulling it out with the TC still attached?
