Right on Sam. That's a good looking truck. How are the strut towers?

Yeh Man ! Great Truck you got !
Congrats to ya !

81 or 82 ?

Nice big campershell on that thing.
The ones that overlap roof/pillars are unique and harder to find.
They also seal much better (leak less/none).

It "might" be an LX trim level. Does it have woodgrain dash and square-edged armrests ?

I don't know all the LX differences but my LX rabbit has inside adjusting mirrors too.

My brother has one of those style of toppers on his toyota and it rubbed though the paint down to shiny metal. A unibody might be better.

Nice truck!!!! :D
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Yeh, the remote mirrors and bumperettes caught my eye.
They are part of LX package - but could probably also be ordered seperately on a base model.

Woodgrain dash, larger looking square-end armrests, nicer door panels, tinted soft-ray glass, somethings i'm not all sure about. Like maybe diff seatcovers, maybe chrome door window trims.

My 81 has a passenger door from an LX.
So i put a matching remote mirror on driver side.
The overlapping topper has been on truck since right after new, no probos, fits like a glove. Just a lil bit larger than the one on tSoG's truck. The ones like that made specifically for VW Trucks - are very unique today. I can see how that might would be different story on non-unibody trucks with more flex.

My 82 has a more generic, more standard size topper that "seals" to the backside of cab. It was probably made/designed for framed small trucks and improvised to fit this VW. It has its own sliding window - and the truck has a slider - so there are 2 sliders in the rearview mirror. lol
I like the overlapper much much better.

key features to report:

218k miles on clock. everything works minus the AC and cruise control because they were both deleted under the hood.

26+ gallon tank. I filled up, from a little under 1/4 tank, and put 20 gallons in  :o
even at 40mpg, thats 1000+ miles per tank.

self adjusting mirrors, sliding rear window,  CB radio (need new antenna)  bolt through vent windows.

strut towers are ok for now, bit of inner fender rust and rot, but it hasn't spread to the towers yet. dunno how deep the rabbit hole goes, but it's not enough to scare me

no idea on LX or not.

my neighbor helped me unload the jetta from my last trip to canada to see tyler and his part collection, who mentioned to a few guys at work the humor of how much stuff we actually stuffed into and pulled out of a vw diesel. one guy said something like "well, my dad has one of them old trucks, kinda for sale... he doesn't use it any more"

I got his number, happened to be workin a few miles south of where he lived shortly thereafter, called him on my way to lunch, skipped eating and drove up to check it out.  made an offer, he said "well i'd like more than that" to which I said, I've only got x, so if you want more, it'll have to wait a few weeks" he told me it wasn't advertised, and I had first dibs, no deposit needed.

two weeks later, I drive up, and bring it home. threw in a second set of wheels, and some le1n paint left over from a respray, along with it.

the GTI badge was glued to one of my cracked GTI grills, it's a lil scraped up, but neighbor is trying to understand GTI/GLI/TDI/GLS/etc differences, so to confuse him, we put the GTI badge on 1.6NA truck.

if we had time today, we were gonna swap manifolds out and throw a lil turbo under the hood. didn't have time...

truck is loaded for mk1m, minus things going where the passenger seat should be. hammock, cooler, tshirts, and a few lil things.

gonna be fun :D

Wonder where that tank came from ? Factory option ?

And what year model is it, when you have time.

my apologies, it's an 81, and the tank looks to be a big aluminum box welded up. I'll try and take pictures of it sometime during/after the trip.

truckin with the neighbor.

lil squat from the load

only one complete engine this trip, but lots of other stuff, along with camping gear. next time, i'm using the mooring cleats to strap more isht to the roof :D

who has the coolest truck on the turnpike?! ME!!!

backrow mafia at sonic drive. I apologize to all those behind the creme dream, with all that stuff, and a 1.6na speed was not exactly agreeing with us.  kinda swamped the place, and took lossa time to get a slushie :(

red truck was as OG as OG can be, the only thing that wasn't original was a deer damaged hood and grill, and you couldn't tell without being told by the older gentleman owner or his wife. it was hot as hell, so I moved the wares out a lil into the sun, and offered them shade under the tent. he was too busy talking, and checking stuff out to take me up on it  ;D

a lil angle on the dangle, tryin to get "bugeye" with a cellphone results in soso wide shots.

guys threw a slip and slide down at the top of the field, I was too busy pulling the IP off the engine I delivered.

tried to get a decent picture of one of my favorite views from any interstate in PA. can anyone tell from the crappy cellphone pictures where I am?
