Air Filter opinions

As the title says

iam thinking of fitting a K&N panel filter to my vw t4 1.9TD

ive been advised it will let more crap in than a standard filter how true this is i dont know but i would of thought it would catch more due to been oiled,,i am also going to fit a front facing ram air duct pipe to the air box all joints will be sealed,any help would be great

I've had my K&N on for more than a year. I don't drive on dirt roads, so my air is rather clean. Every time I've pulled the turbo look, its rather clean so I am not getting dirt past mine. I have ran them for years on just about every application I have had. On autos it has been very good, but on dirt track cars and motox 4 wheelers the dust is sometimes bad. We went with outerwares over them and didn't have an issue then. Before my buddies 2 stroke would need rebuilt after a couple races, after the outerwares the rings would usually outlast the piston . His jetting was really finicky, but he would usually get a year out of an engine before it would melt down. The cylinder walls wouldn't have the tell tale scoring from the sandblasting it would take when he just ran the open element.
Granted these engines were basically ran with the element fully exposed, no airbox, in basically a sandbox, and turning about 12,000RPM most all the time. So to review lots will say bad about them, but it is like anything if you know what you are doing and keep them cleaned it will be great for you.

iam going to fit a panel filter in the stock air box & i was also going to block the original air box inlet which gets its air from the drivers side front wing "Slotted Vents"

& fit a ram air duct system where it will pick fresh cold air from the front of the van right under the drivers head light due to there been a 2" diameter hole in the front panel so the pipe work can go through that & fixed to the air box all the joints will be totally sealed,my theory is it will get forced front cold air

yea, right.. the oil does it, not the idiot spraying 12 ounces of oil on a filter that takes 2 ounces. sure, that will take out your mass air sensor, but thats not K&N's fault.

ive ran K&N filters on all my rigs. they work just fine. took the intake plenum off my 4runner after 60k miles, and it was almost as clean as when i put it on there. they work fine. if your doing lots of off road, get an outterwear.

know what you mean when you say too much oil it just needs a lite blow over with the oil spray not took drowning in the stuff lol,,mine is for a road vehicle not off road so it will be fine,,iam not with you on the  intake plenum,,with out me sounding thick,,was it to improve things??
whats your thoughts on my front facing cold air inlet theory for the air box intake,,it works out just right for the air box as its nion 12" away from so i can run some air ducting from the front panel just under the head light to the air box & all the joints will be sealed plus sealed to the air box via a flange thats sealed to the air box,,thanks for any input you can offer

You can get a 1' flange with some 1'flex hose and make your own intake

MKII are almost done

All 5 ply silicone and the Mk1 is oblong at the airfilter for a better fit.

On gassers maybe but the diesel will probably run just fine on a 50/50 mix of that oil and diesel.

I put about 180k on a dodge neon with a homemade intake and a k&n cone filter.

I can understand putting one on your race car but I dislike them for everyday use... If you can see through the holes in the gauze, it just has to let more fine dirt in than a paper filter.

The problems with the oil harming your car are related to the filter oil contaminating the hotwire mass airflow sensor on some fuel injected gas cars. This would not be a problem on a mechanically injected diesel.

no, just bringing up the fact that lots of people think K&Ns are bad for your car just because the oil takes out the mass air sensor. usually they work great when you first install them. then when they get dirty, they need to be cleaned. and then they get cleaned and get way too much oil put back on. then the mass air sensor gives you the finger.

The risk/reward ratio is still kinda iffy on these in my book.  OEM filters are cheap, change often, drive long time.

ive had fine luck with washable filters. they actually work better as they get dirtier. and will work with a 1/4 inch of dirt on them. all my re-useable filters have paid themselves off..
