MK2 1.6 into a MK1 rabbit
« on: July 03, 2010, 02:18:55 pm »
Just purchased a jetta with a wrecked body, great 1.6L.

It's going to go into my Mk1 rabbit. I noticed the mounts are very different, and was wondering what else will need to be swapped.

I'm also changing the oil/water pump and putting in a windege tray.

anyone have any tips?

also, would the speedo cable from the mk2 work? I wrecked mine when I pulled the engine originally (it was frozen in)

you gotta take the injection pump bracket off and switch it.

make sure the oil pump shafts are the same length, there are some oil pump/vac pump combos that simply will not work together. you could either have it so that the shaft is too long, or so that it is too short and wont even spin the oil pump. unless its bad, i would leave the oil pump in the engine thats there..

and mk2 speedo cable on a mk1, not even close.. sorry. gotta get the proper mk1 unit. mk1 cables thread on, mk2 units have quick clips holding them on.

Thats a detail I was worrying about.

I'll keep the oil pump thats in it there then. Vac pump is getting changed from diaphragm style to vein style.

Will a MK1 cable fit in the later 020 trans?

taking the IP bracket off and switching it means taking the pump off, so you might as well throw new seals at it, and do some new glow plugs while your at it also, and a timing belt since its going to be off. you have a mk2 engine with a diaphragm pump in it? they never came that way.. vane pumps came standard in 83 or 84.. make sure the bottom of the vacuum pumps look exactly the same, and that the oil pump drive tang is the same depth from the bottom face of the gear.

mk1 and mk2 transmissions are pretty much identical, aside from the drive flanges, bracketry, and linkages.. the cable works just fine. install the mk1 cable.

oops, this is this engine's third car. Originally from a 82 rabbit 4 door.

IP is not leaking, and I don't have time to wait for new seals. I do have the timing belt and tensioner new in a box.

Are the mk1 linkages going to bolt right up to the trans? my rabbit axles going to fit?? (they're new...)

as long as the rabbit has 90mm inner cv joints and the car it came out of does too, then it will fit. and the linkages will fit once you install all the right brackets onto the transmission.

i just hope it doesnt come back to bite you with the seals.. the one for the cold start leaks soooo often, and is SOOO easy to replace once you have the pump off.

its just a normal o ring. i think you could probably source the front seal also, wouldnt be a bad idea to replace it also, those are the 2 hardest seals to replace.
