I just bought a 1981 rabbit 1.6n/a. The PO said that the engine overheated, so he had the headgasket replaced. The last time it was running was one year ago. When I received it, I put in a new battery and cranked it over by hand to check everything out. I heard water sloshing coming from the intake manifold. There was water/coolant coming out of the runner number 4. I then removed the 4 injectors and cranked over the engine to remove all the water. I then reinstalled everything and reset the timing. I then started it up. It ran rough obviously but after 10-15 min, it ran fine. My concern was the large amount of white smoke coming out of the tailpipe, followed by oil coming out of the tailpipe also. After running the car, driving it on the streets and freeway for about 30 minutes, all the smoking stopped and no more oil was coming out of the tailpipe. What gives? While driving, I revved the motor through the gears to see if the engine would run away or if the engine would start overheating but neither did occur. I am just baffled that the PO mechanic who replaced the headgasket said the engine was toast because he could hear water in the intake manifold, where after driving the car for some time, there isn't any water in the intake manifold and the coolant reservoir is still full.
Please Help!
sounds good to me?
I don't see a problem?
I'd drive it a bit more and see what happens.
he probably just heard some compression escaping past the valves/rings. it could sound like water bubbling in the right circumstances. i bet the previous mechanic was just a complete idiot. was he a honda mechanic too?
