Well, as it states I am new here and new to diesels. I am very mechanical, but I have some questions that I couldn't find in the search. This is what I have put together for my 1.6 td build: 1.6 td engine (complete rebuild), 1.6td pump with an 11mm rotor / head, garrett gt15. It is just a basic setup from what I understand but I am more just curious if others have had a similar setup and what kind of power I can expect. Anything helps and I hope to be on here more often. I will post pictures and progress of the build as I go. Thanks!

right. i should have said that part of it. i do have an intercooler setup and an oil cooler for it as well. the garrett is a gt1548, so it is the biggest of the gt15 series. i will post pics tomorrow night.

This is good, another Utah member. It sounds like you're off to a good start. I think an 11 mm head is a tad more than "basic" though. The typical 1.6 TD has a 9 mm head (eco-diesels aside, which have 8mm heads). You really don't want to over-fuel that puppy. As long as you have plenty of cool boost, which you should with a large GT15 and intercooler, you will probably be ok. Yes, post up some pictures, we love that stuff.

so is the 11mm head too much for my setup?

I don't know if it's too much, but it's big. The TDI guys go with those big heads in part because they make their power with high torque at low RPMs. IDI engines tend to make their power with lower torque at higher RPMs, and thus don't need such big heads. IDIs use lots of smaller injections instead of fewer larger injections.

A 2.5" exhaust should be plenty big. Probably the best thing you can do will be to throw out the factory toilet bowl down pipe.

yeah im definitely ditching the dp since im running a gt15 on it. but, from what i understand or have been told, it is better for a bigger turbo application to have bigger/shorter injection than smaller/longer injection. im not correcting anyone i just dont know to be honest.

His pistons may be solid to use, as they are only hunks of metal and therefore dont have much room to fail mechanically (aside from bad metal forging, and then melting..) but I wouldn't use his rings, if that is what you have on there.. There been two people who's Prothe rings did not seat, and it started consuming oil way to early.

Yeah I believe arco does alot of tractor pistons. If they are the ones I am thinking of they have good quality control and these probably aren't originally for vw. I would guess they are for some tractor somewhere. I am using them on my build, but I changed the rings to the Goetze brand IIRC. I probably wouldn't have even used these if I didn't buy them a year and a half before the start of the build. I had them for my N/A and didn't want to throw them out.
I think you have a great start going. Do you know much about that turbo? I would love to hear more:D

I have heard the same thing about his rings and that made me nervous. I will definitely go ahead and get different rings for it. Thanks!

I am very excited about the build and I hope what I have works well together. I don't really know much about the turbo as far as the application it is for. It seems to be a decent size turbo that is pretty efficient compared to other turbos its size. Its just a journal bearing center with oil and water fittings which will be nice to help keep things a little cooler back there. Once I get it all put together and start driving it I will post more about it. Thanks for the input!
