Possible Swap
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:32:19 pm »
I have a 1984 rabbit 1.6n/a.  I have totally rebuilt the motor and IP.  I have 1000miles on the motor.  The car was originally hit slightly on the right front.  Enough to where the hood doesn't not line up correctly with the front fenders.  The front end has shifted about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch to the left but all mounting points for the suspension both lower and upper are still aligned.  The interior sucks, I bought it with a hodge podge of parts.  I just picked up a super clean 1981 rabbit 1.6n/a with A/C for $500, not running.  My plan is to transfer the motor and transmission from my 1984 to the 1981.  One problem with the 1981 is a rust spot about 1-1.5 inch in diameter that has gone through the sheet metal right under the passenger side windshield adjacent to the passenger side windshield wiper motor.  I don't know what to do because I don't know how much it would be to fix the rust hole on the 1981 vs realigning the front of the 1984.  The rust hole on the 1981 is the only problem both exteriorly and interiorly the car is immaculate.  The 1984 needs a totally new interior, dash, seats, etc... and the exterior will need the front damage shifted to the right a bit.  WHAT would you guys do?

I'd just keep driving the 84. If the interior really bothers you swap in the 81 interior.

Does the front end look bad or just a bit tweaked?

I guess just tweaked.  If I align the top part of the hood with the bottom part of the windshield sheet metal, the front is tweaked toward the left drivers side about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch.  I cannot move the fenders towards the right because they isn't anymore adjustment.  The PO stated the car was hit on the right side.  The fender color doesn't match the car, also from inside the engine bay, you can see the sheet metal tweaked on the right side, but no damage was done to the frame rail, just the outer part containing the front wheel well.  What are the pros and cons between the 1981 vs 1984 model?

I think the 84 has marginally better wiring.
