What to do with MK3 trannies?
« on: June 16, 2010, 09:07:35 pm »
I have at least 5 trannies removed from MK3 Golf/Jetta, some good, some with reverse gear problems, CHD codes if I remember correctly.  Are there parts worth harvesting from these units, or just take them in for my 89 cents/lb?

Thanks,

Ian

betcha if you went to a few tranny shops they may buy a few off of you for better then scrap prices.

I'm in the same boat, I've got 2 spares with varying issues.  I figure I can make one good one out of the parts at some point.  I don't think there's anything unhealthy about stockpiling TD parts, especially tranny's since they're not the easiest to find out west here.

I had 3 last year. Called the dealer as they were buying cores a few years before, didn't want them. Asked the transmission shop if they wanted or if they knew someone who wanted cores- didn't want them. I ended up selling them for scrap.

Overall ratio is pretty good on those boxes - I'd think a lot of people would be looking for at least the 5th gear on them...

I could be interested depending on how much shipping is, I would only really want it for 5th gear like they were saying.  If you guys are interested in doing that, could you get me the trans codes and what was wrong with the box?

thx,
Ryan

Talk to retro mike on vortex. He used to use them for auto-x. I don't know how into that he is anymore since he had a kid.

Well, my current ride has a stupid 5th gear in it, and the CHD has a .75, so I think I'll pull the 5th gear assemblies, replace mine and sell the rest.

Thanks all,

Ian

Same boat on 4-speed transmissions. No one wants them, BUT the reverse gear is the same as all 5-speed models and more durable than the crap ones they used in the MK3 transmissions. It really doesn't take much to swap out the reverse gear (like 1-2 hours) and not much in parts either (assuming the rest of the internals aren't beganked by floating chips).

It would be a shame to see them scrapped, but who'll take em? Maybe Brokevw.com will buy them as cores????

Worst case scenario, you can pull the gearsets and scrap the housings. Someone on Vortex sells just matched gearsets and seems to sell them frequently.
