mystery shifter

The new '81 rabbit we just got has a really vague shifter.  It's hard to tell if you are in nuetral or in gear there is so much play when it's in gear, and it's sort of hard to find exactly where the different gears even are.   My '90 GTI isn't like this, but the '81 VW pickup with a 5 speed is really vague too.  Worn bushings in that silly series of levers perhaps?  The tranny itself seems to be fine, as it doesn't make noise or pop out of gear.

I got used to it fairly quickly, and it doesn't bother me (I'm also used to my truck which is missing all the line up pins in its shifter so you have to know exactly where the gears are or you'll put it between two of them), but two people are going to have to learn to drive a stick on this car, so we'd like to make it a little more definite if possible.

worn bushings is likely.

i got the kit to redo them all for $17 IIRC.

much easier to do when the motor is out of the car   but not a very difficult job either way.
