Hey, I had a look at that link to the TDI cams you sent. YAWN!! I couldn't care less about TDIs. In the few moments I was actually able to force myself to read that post (I really, REALLY don't care about TDI stuff) it sounds like they need some lifter bore clearancing work done to the engine. Those cams, with the required clearancing would probably work in a HIGHLY MODIFIED and GILES PUMP'ED IDI engine. Note that the cam locking tool for a TDI engine is different than IDI.
In an IDI engine with a stock pump and few or no mods to promote high rpm breathing, a really big cam would likely degrade overall performance. The drop in dynamic compression (that's a BIG drop on his cam) comes from overlap. That drop in compression will negatively affect cold starting ability.
The wording in his ad is tricky. "...up to 5whp more than blah blah blah other cams blah blah. So he is saying his cam offers a 0-5hp gain over other choices. Meaning, of course, he's comparison tested them all and knows this, right? But then why is he offering someone $140 for their dyno sheets? That makes me wonder just how much testing he's done himself.
"Up to 5whp'. Could be 5, could be 0, could even be a loss of power compared to others. There are way too many variables involved to accurately claim that.
In any case, for some reason, he decided to go the very expensive route of casting new cams. The "OEM casting facility" he mentions has a good ring to it. OEM to OE VW engines? Doubt it. Looked into that myself, and they don't like playing with the public.
There are many places in China that are "OEM" suppliers.
The cams in new vw diesel heads from Topline come from China, which likely explains why they wear out so fast.
I've have witnessed, in person, what manufacturing (generally speaking) is like in China. Not pretty. (That's why I'm heading there for 5-6 years to take over a factory and eliminate the loooong list of quality issues)
Anyway, most of this is speculation.
He says his cams work (in TDI's), I say my cams work in IDI's. Maybe his would perform better than mine when properly fitted to a properly modified IDI.
Perhaps someone should buy one and try!
For Canadian buyers, it'll be just shy of $500 by the time one of those cams is in your hands, after shipping, tax and duty fees. $400ish for US buyers. That's enough dough to buy my cam, a complete head gasket set, AND have your head ported and polished (through my guy anyway). As a comparison, the most expensive 8v camshaft from Techtonics Tuning is $250 US, using an OEM chill-hardened billet. Curious.
Regardless, if you have $500 to spend on your IDI, you're WAY better off saving a bit more and getting a Giles pump than ANY camshaft, his or mine.
You can quote me on that, if you wish.
My two cents.

and this is what he said.  hes also checking out the solid lifter compatibility.

I have now 260 (228@1mm) 10,7mm lift cam in my 1,9 idi. It idles a little rough and smokes at cold, but when warmed, itīs ok.
