Head gasket
« on: May 30, 2010, 10:04:44 am »
I'm changing the head gasket on my 82 Rabbit, and noticed that some coolant holes (3) are blocked in the old and new gaskets.
Is there any problems if I open these holes?

Thanks

The general consensus seems to be that the headgasket manufacturer knows what he's doing and sized the gasket holes appropriately to restrict flow as required to balance flow and circulation.

As you can tell, these restrictions exist straight from the factory...I personally leave 'em be.

Now... if you mean that there are holes completely missing... as opposed to there but restricted... some pictures would probably help sort it out.

Thanks for the reply!
I didn't explain correctly, sorry about that.
Like you said, the holes are completely missing, only 3 the rest are all there.
I have pictures, but I don't know how to post it.

Thank You

it looks to me that the two side holes were blocked originally and got eaten away over time.  also iirc the TD head gaskets are different than the N/A ones.  might have just gotten the wrong one shipped to you
