Swapping motors.

So here is the issue. In the 81 currently there resides an old tired 11mm mechanical 1.6.. I have in my garage a clean good running 91 hydro 1.6 with almost a 1/4 of the mileage of the mech motor..  HOWEVER! the 91 has an AWY trans and thus very short gearing. The 81 has the FF with a nice tall .71 5th... The reason for the proposed swap is that the 81 has somewhere around 850-950 thousand kilometers on it and the HG is going, and it is an 11mm.. so no turbo :( The 91 has 300k on it and no sludge at all in the oil, this thing was kept clean and on synthetic for sure. I was thinking since I already have to do the HG, i might as well just do a small bit more of effort and put a fresher engine in. right? I want an AAZ eventually, but THAT sadly just isn't in the cards right this moment.. lol

What I need to do, is swap in the 91 motor and the 91 clutch in to the car and the 81 trans respectively. Are the clutches the same from 1981 to 1991? they are the same 020 trans so I would imagine so.. but I have never really looked in to the transmissions at all on these things. Now is the time to start this learning experience.

Can I do this swap in a day or two? Shouldn't be more then a few bolts and hoses right?

Isn't this the car that has sooooo much power.......for a NA ;D.

I thought a 11mm with headstuds was turboable.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Yeah it does i do not lie, is most certainly using all its 52hp.

The pump will be going to the 91 motor.. I have a low mileage hydro, why would i chance it with a million miler? lol

i got an 11mm 1.5 engine with a turbo and lots of boost. it does fine. even has stock head bolts and gasket. 25 psi with an intercooler..

So Jam, can it still not be done?

11mm 1.6 D blocks are tougher than 1.5 blocks.

i love people telling me something cant be done.

i dont suggest anyone else turbos a 1.5, but it can be done very easily and trouble free.

and if your engine has like 800k kms, thats not even close to a million miles...

900k kms = 550,000 miles. still WAY impressive. if it is in fact the original engine.

and the AWY and FF transmissions will bolt in each others places. bell housing and input shaft i mean. the only thing you have to worry about with clutches, is the 22 spline or 24 spline units. 22 spline chutches/input shafts were used until 87, then they went to the 24 spline input shaft/clutch with the 16v. ABA/AAZ engines also use the bigger 24 spline setup. you can use 190, 200, and 210mm clutches on 22 spline 020 trannies. i always go for the 16v pressure plate and 210mm 8v clutch whenever i change one out.

Original engine Kevo, speedo reads 569k miles. TON of blow-by, another reason to not turbo "this" engine, not necessairly all 11mm engines (we are aware of your awesomeness ;)). This engine will need a total rebuild to remain in service sadly...

So the 12mm hydro engine is pretty tight and minimal blow-by. I think I wish to use it until I get my AAZ. :)

This clutch info is disheartening :( From what I read the clutch from the AWY 91 trans will not pop out and in to my FF 81 trans.. Guess I'm clutch shopping, might as well.. as i plan to use this trans for the AAZ as well. eventually.

Thanks for all the info KEvo.

No I am pretty sure the clutch will work. IIRC when I got my clutch the option was small or big spline, but both had 24 splines. The scirocco was the one that came with the big spline from what I was told. I bet brokevw could tell you or his site could. I am 99 percent sure that if both came on diesel cars they should work.

your clutch will work fine. bolt your ff up to the 91 engine just to be sure before you buy a new clutch. cause once its all bolted together, your gonna think to yourself "damn, im glad i dont have to buy a new clutch." like i said, the only differences are if the trans is coming off a 16v or aba/aaz. they run the bigger setup.
