81 Rabbit with 1.9TD?
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:36:28 pm »
I currently have a 1.6TD but the price to fix the previous damage (bent Con-Rods due to hydrolock) is coming to a high price (boring Cylinders, oversized Pistons, etc.) Just wondering how much work is involved with swapping a 1.9 (not sure on what engine year yet) into 81 and any possible snags?.

Also what is involved with putting the 1.6 Turbo on the 1.9?

What year 1.9?
92-98 are usually AAZ and they are easy
96-99.5 are TDI and they require a good bit of wiring
99.5+ require custom mounts plus a good bit of wiring.

I have done 3 of these swaps. 1 into a mk1 rabbit, 1 into a mk1 jetta, and just starting one into a mk1 cabriolet.

You can have the old engine out/new engine dropped into the car in a weekend if your mechanically inclined.

Any 1.9TD will work with your transmission, clutch, engine mounts. You can use the 1.6TD turbo but would need to fabricate some kind of oil drain(they each have different return lines)

In the first mk1, the rabbit. it was already a turbo diesel so i used the original toilet bowl.
The second one in a mk1 jetta it had a gasser toilet bowl downpipe that connects to the manifold, the angle and location is a little different then a TD toilet bowl so i modified the pipe to get the correct angle.
In the cabriolet i used the stock mk3 AAZ downpipe and cut and welded it to fit and use the stock exhaust flange.
