Sachs clutch failure

I might consider leaning away from sachs clutches now considering this:



And the fact that they have a one year warranty. This happened after about 16 months and about 7500 miles. The rust is due to the last week in the yard during rainy weather.

What do you guys think?

Pretty mellow most of the time, it's a 1.6 n/a and there is a lot of meat on the clutch, it didn't wear out.

I had that happen to me on a no-name Korean clutch, in fact, it was last time I had to get a tow home ( knock wood)in the Caddy .  I replaced it with a Luk clutch ( I think) and it lasted 15 years...and it still had plenty of use left after that. 

I think I hear the same "death rattle " noise now in the "new" Jetta when I first start it....
'91 Jetta 1.6 NA, '82 Caddy 1.6NA, '81 Cabriolet,  4 Mercedes OM616/617s , 2 Triumphs and a Citroen DS19 in a pear tree.

Dude, That really Sachs!!!  :P

My clutch will need to be done soon, since I'm running a close ratio ASF Trans my plan is to use a 16 Valve 210MM Flywheel, Clutch (probably Luk), and Pressure Plate. From everything I've read thus far the 16V 210MM setup is a direct bolt up to the 8V engines including the diesel.

Had the same thing happen to me a few years ago with a Sachs. The springs fractured and whirled around in the bellhousing. I think they must have had a manufacturing issue for a short while. Replaced it and no problems since. This was on a 1.6NA as well, so it's not like massive torque was the problem!

Same thing happened to my Sachs clutch. I thought it was from the posi burnouts I did in my 85 TD Jetta.  ::)  Don't think I will be using Sachs ever again.

i've seen alot of the higher hp gas guys are tearing the straps on there sachs pressure plates.  many people double or triple strap them before installing.  and mind you this isn't on 400hp car.  this is on like n/a built 16v's so probably nothing over 150hp
