Hey everyone,

My name is Jack, and I hail from south of the border (Wisconsin).  I'm currently a student at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, and I've been messing with Volkswagens for about 5 years.  I've had a bajillion in those 5 years, mostly mk1s, but all gassers.  I've finally got my greasy paws on a nice '82 diesel, hence the joining of your fine forum.

The car:  (sorry for the grainy pictures, if it would stop raining here I would snap some decent ones)





The story of the car goes like this:  my friend traded his '71 bay window bus for two diesels, this rabbit and a '91 Jetta TD.  He had just picked up an '82 diesel rabbit the week before, so he sold me this one.  According to the previous owner(who's owned the car since the late '90s), the car was sold in the West Bend area new, and he remembers seeing it (with the Titleist sticker!) in 1984, putzing around the area north of Milwaukee.  He put over 100k miles on it, and he took really, really good care of it.  He let it sit after he bought the TD, and then let both sit when he picked up a mk4 diesel.  For being a Wisconsin car it's entire life, it is in surprisingly good shape, rust wise.  It has some issues around the rear beam mounting points and inner fenders, but it really isn't that bad.

We replaced all of the brake hard lines, both rear soft lines, passenger side caliper and rear wheel cylinder, and the master/booster assembly, and I was on the road.  I'd like to make a quick note at this point: I am an aircooled guy through-and-through, and I actually own my dream vehicle, a '66 SO-42 Westy, so I'm used to driving slow cars.  However, this Rabbit feels even slower than my bus!  In fact, it is very much like driving the bus.  Narrow tires and boxy shape make it hell in crosswinds, reaching 55mph is a feat to be celebrated, loading it full of people and driving around is not the greatest idea, and, well, they are both 4 speeds, so the shift points are nearly identical.

Of course, being 28 years old has it's disadvantages.  The radiator was rotted out all along the bottom, so I had to replace that.  The lower rad hose leaks at the pump, no matter how tight the clamp is.  A friend told me it is likely corrosion on the pump housing(?).  It has a loud, farty exhaust leak, so I'm on the hunt for a dual-chamber down pipe from a gasser (have the manifold), as I believe the toilet bowl gasket is the culprit.  Needs tires real bad, they are all pretty worn (except my awesome GTI spare, as seen in the pictures).  I also need new headlight buckets, although my lights work quite well for lighting up the road directly under the car or the gravel shoulder.

Wow, what an epic first post.  I hope to become moderately proficient in working on my new toy, which is my reason for joining this forum.  Now, I'm off to lurk, searching for veggie grease conversions and the such.  Thank you, whomever makes it all the way through this slightly wordy post.

Wow, welcome to the forum. Nice busses!!

There are a couple things you can do to give it a little more go and be way more driveable.

When it's up to temp does it smoke black/gray when floored? If not then there's a screw on the injector pump you can turn in a 8th turn or so at a time that'll give you a little more go. You only want a wisp of smoke and an EGT gauge would be a good idea.

Why did your second 'vert get cut up? It looks perfet in the pic.

X2, it should beat a stock bus easy.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

I agree.  I recently picked up a Mk1 ('82) diesel.  It's a 2-door, but otherwise same as yours (even the color...it seems like 99 out of 100 MK1 Rabbits are off-white.  Not that I'm complaining).  Anyway, I comfortably cruise at 70mph on the freeway, and acceleration through the gears is quite spirited considering the 52HP.  It was a little rough at first, but replacing the oil, all the filters, and running some additive (Redline, KleenDiesel... not at the same time, of course.) over a few tanks of fuel smoothed things out very nicely.  I have only the slightest puff of light grey smoke on a cold morning (well, cold for Southern California).  At first, it smoked during hard acceleration, but the additive and air filter change seemed to clear that up.

Anyway, I admit it's no speed demon, but I'm coming from a MkIV diesel Golf (1.9TDI) and I'm finding very little to complain about in my new Rabbit friend.  I'm no expert (still learning about all of this myself), but you might consider replacing the injectors and/or nozzles.  IP might need some help, too.

The reason the 'vert got cut up?  No one would buy it, and it had some really weird strut tower and structural rust from botched repairs done many years ago.  The core support was barely held on at all.  Plus, the top leaked and drove me nuts, and it ran really badly.  Basically, that car was my enemy.

I recently went on a drive with my friend who has the TD, and it appears that my speedometer might just be off.  It doesn't feel abnormally slow (or maybe my bus is abnormally fast?), but it is a real struggle to maintain an indicated 55 on the highway.  When I was cruising at about 58 down a hill, with the TD following, he told me I was going over 65!  I have no idea why this would be, as the front tires are 155/80 13s, the correct stock size for this car, if I'm not mistaken.

Due to the exhaust leak, it's kinda tough to see if it's smoking at all, actually, so I'm not sure if it's tuned correctly or not.  It starts up easily after a cold (Wisconsin) night, say, 35 degrees, but it is really lacking in top end.  Time to read up, I suppose.

first off, that is an extremely fine rabbit for being a wisconsin car. might have gotten yourself one of those galvanized rabbits like my 81 2 door..

and second off, you had an exact twin to my 85 GTI.. minus the green door. didnt you just love that car?

and it looks like its time to start gathering pieces for a turbo setup on the rabbit. they haul some @$$ after you turbo them and turn up the boost and fuel :)

I'd love to find a turbo setup, to be honest.  When I have the budget to do so, it'll be high on my list.

I helped move someone out of a dorm today, with just my rabbit (and it's epic roof rack).  It was satisfying driving down main street with a futon strapped to the roof.

What transmission code are you dealing with?  You might want to do a timing belt change (interference engine) and check/play with your timing.

From what I was told, the timing belt was done just a few years ago, right before it got parked.  As for the transmission, I need to scrape the goo off the case to see what code it is.  I know that there is a huge gap between 3rd and 4th, and 4th is extremely "low".

55 should be NO Problem for a 1.6 in a rabbit unless something is really wrong.

Yes my 1.6 n/a in a Jetta with at least 900lbs of people in the car will hold its own at 70-80 on the highway.

(friend of OP) It seems the car has been progressively getting quicker/faster as it's driven.
