Rebuilding a K14 Turbo

Hello guys,

I have a K14 in bits and a rebuild kit from prothe.

I have ultrasonic cleaned the compressor and turbine, and have replaced the bearings and seals. I will also have it balanced.

I am concerned about the wastegate. The wastegate valve doesnt seem to contact the cast iron of the hot snail. Is the protrusion of the valve from the actuator adjustable? How do I adjust this?

Is there anything else I should do with the turbo before i return it to service?

The wastegate poppet shaft is likely seized in the open position. The design is much like an intake/exhaust valve but it gets more gummed up with soot and goo.

You might get away with soaking the shaft in penetrant and maybe tapping on the head of the poppet... but I had to separate the crimp holding the two halves of the wastegate body together so I could work from the opposite side. Ultimately the poppet should contact the valve seat and hold the wastegate body away from the turbo housing by about 2mm with a moderate spring pressure.

What did you you use to clamp the actuator back together with after you removed the pressed metal crimp?

Also, is a k14 a good match with a 1.6? I have thermal coated pistons, oil squirters, boost and egt gauges, intercooler, TD pump.

I have just adjusted the spring tension to maximum, then rotated back and forth the poppet valve and "phong" it sprung out! It moves in and out freely about 4-5 mm. Should i lubricate the valve guide with anything? I have nickel antiseize on hand....

Right on! I put some copper anti-seize on mine, knowing that it would burn off in short order...
Also, it wasn't too long before I screwed the adjuster down tight, effectively locking the wastegate shut anyhow.
