1.9TD 1992 jetta swap
« on: May 08, 2010, 02:51:26 pm »
Hi,
I'm completing my diesel swap, a 1.9TD into a 1992 jetta that previously had a 1.6D. My problem is the alternator. There are 3 wire; the main, tach (red), and D+ (blue). When I started my engine for the fist time today every thing went well except for smoke that came out of the cluster. Now the volt, glowplug and turn signal lights don't work because a trace melted on the cluster circuit board. I connected the MK3 alternator the same way as the MK2 was. The Tachometer works perfectly too. Is it just a freak occurrence or is the alternator not compatible with a MK2 cluster?

Thank you.

I have a Mk II alternator in my Mk III, so I know it works fine that way... I'd be surprised to find it wouldn't work the opposite way.
