Changing up the interior?

Looking at replacing the seats and door panels of a 1987 Jetta.  Are VW seats interchangable past 1992 for my car?

i believe mk3 seats will work in an mk2.. not sure if it is drop in.. or if it needs some work.

Sorry for the "newbie" question but what is MKI,II, and III?
I can guess but would rather have understanding.

mk1 = A1 chassis (74-83)
mk2 = A2 chassis (83-92)
....

And so on.. just a designation used to differenciate between generations of the same model.  :)

uhhh a1 would be 74 to 84
and  a2 would be 85 to 92

Hey Kant, I think you've just demonstrated why the a1,a2 etc are a good idea.  I believe you are correct, and we didn't see the a2 until MY85.  If memory serves, DCC is also correct, in europe the a2's were released long before we saw them in Canada.  I had, long ago, an 84 a1 jetta.

Back on topic, the mk3 seats will fit in a mk2, with modifications to the seat brackets, or more nicely by swapping the metal seat base from a 90-92 mk2 seat into the mk3 seat.  There are several posts about this on the vortex, and IIRC, at least one on this forum as well.

mk1 and mk2 seats are interchangeable too. you gotta swap them from side to side tho. ie: driver fits on the pass side..

A1 cars had three different seat track designs:  super early, mid, and late.   Late is exactly like mk2 (A2), and mid is mirrored (so swapping back and forth works).   Real early requires a welding modification on the middle front track.

A3 seats are slightly different than A2 as well, the outer track is moved outward a bit, but the center and inner track are the same.  Cutting and welding on the one leg is the way to go...

thank you for explaining that. makes a little more sense why my recaros wouldnt fit in my 80 rabbit.
