1.6 NA 1982 jetta with some duct tape

hows it going, here to get some advice on my newly purchased (sort of) diesel jetta. Got some help on the vortex forums but was told this is where the real diesel wizards are at.

Got this of an old neighbor, pretty much gave the car to me since I've always shoveled his snow and whatnot. Anyway, its far from perfect, has alot of duct tape in the engine bay that I'm currently in the process of removing. Removed the rally lights as well as the headlight umbrellas shown in the pictures from the first day i got her. A load of drywall screws in the dash bezel, to keep it from "shaking", and the triangular windows up front are caulked shut. And it looks like a diy copper pipe running from the radiator? Anyways, I can't complain, I love this car and I'm trying to make it my daily driver and give it the love and care it deserves. Heres some pics, let me know what you think.

The reason I'm posting besides introducing myself is to see if anyone could point me to a how-to on running some lubro-moly diesel purge, that would be really great.

Mother Of God. This guy was a real piece of work. This is gonna take some elbow grease. Jeeez.

But hey what the hell is fun about getting a perfect car?!? When i got my 81 it was sittin in a barn for 4 years and the guy who drove it last was a very grubby person ;p

Remove all that duct tape and copper hose, and a simple run of what.. 1/4" heater hose will fix that up.. Duct tape has no place in an engine bay.

A timing belt and tensioner as well as timing tools are what you need to get for sure, as the timing belt is probably the most important piece of the engine. If it breaks, even at idle, your SOL. Valves will smack pistons and grenade the head. If your lucky it won't be too bad and you won't bend the connecting rods and you'll be able to reuse the bottom end without  touching it..

Does it run well? any missing? starts ok?

I think whatever the can says on how to use the diesel purge that is how I would do it.

Looks awesome. Clean car. The duct tape almost looks like foil tape for heat resistance. I personally love the screws in the dash.

Perhaps the silver tape was to keep the engine from stalling when encountering UFO's?
I kind of like the Frankenstien screw thing.......

Is that a toggle switch for the heater fan? An all or nothing proposition on that it looks like.

the engine has started up first crank every time so far, and it sounds pretty good besides some rattling that I'm hoping to solve with some new techtonics heavy duty mounts. There is a slight grind every once in a while in second gear which I'm assuming is the second gear syncro. I just got done classes today, so I've got the whole summer to spend some money and time on this thing. I'd like to take it somewhre to have the timing belt and tensioner done, as its importance kind of scares me to try myself.

Maybe heading over to home depot today to pick up some stuff to build a roof rack, any one out there have some experience with the feet that mount the existing roof racks out there? I was thinking of making some, I've got a full metals studio available to me at school 24 hours as metal smithing and CAD are my major, and I plan to take advantage of it.

On a side note, I'm removing this tape piece by piece and haven't really got a chance to get all of it off, but the 4 or so clumps I've pulled off so far have revealed nothing, and were there for almost no reason. I have no clue why he did half of the rigging he did on this car.

Perhaps you can replace the duct tape with billet aluminum

or at least you are ever at the ready for any duct tape related repair
