Sorry, I don't know what the Eclipse intercooler looks like. But if you need a Saab aluminium one that can fit infront of the rad, I'll let it go for cheap. Or you could cut a hole in the hood and add a NACCA duct for air flow with a fan too.
If your going to the car show I'll bring it for ya?
They are small like maybe 10x10x4.
Really don't want to cut the hood, but would be willing to duct air from up front by radiator.
Have you had the saab intercooler in a mk1? I may be interested in that.
I'm trying to find someone to go with me to portland sunday, but no takers yet.
If I come I'll be hauling the caddy on the rollback just in case it goes BOOM.

I have not ran the Saab intercooler but I do know that it'll fit as I attemped to use one before the one I got now. Only slight modding to make it fit. Such as radiator mounting and plumbing to the intercooler.
Dude PM me your phone # before you go so we can meet up.

First of all i'd like to say hello and thanks for all the information i've got from reading on this forum. This is a tdi setup that i purchased about 1-1/2 years ago before i came across this forum. ( and yes its from proth). Here are a few pics or my 81 vw pu 1.6 na to td build. I've been gathering parts for over a year to put a tdi turbo setup on a 1.6 na. i'm just mocking everything up now on a spare 1.6 and then i will transfer it to my pu.
I'm curious to know how it works for you.
...and everyone else said I was crazy for wanting to do this. But I thank you for sharing your results. That gives me a little more faith.
So far its been a cool little conversion with no problems. 3 years ago I'd never even seen a IDI TD VW as they are pretty rare around here.
When I decided to turbo my na caddy. the prothe kit was as close to a complete kit as I could find. Since joining the forum I have been buying
up spare TD parts here and there. I now have almost 2 complete TD conversion kits plus the Prothe kit I'm currently running.

Cool dude. Isn't it fun playing with these engines and pumps.
Yes, get the intercooler piped in and you'll be impressed with the results.
Glad to see your conversion is still ticking along well. Keep us all posted with your results.
It is very fun and addictive Josh.
Any idea where to mount that little eclipse intercooler?? I've placed it all over the engine bay,
but have'nt found a place I like without running a fan on it. It would almost fit in the rain tray but don't know about air flow.
I would like to keep piping as short as possible.
I saw one that fit in a box and they cut an intake thru the hood...kind of like a hoodscoop, but off-set, it was interesting looking.

Made some major progress yesterday with smoke/high EGT's While on boost. I've adjusted that fuel screw, idle screw and MBC With every different combination I could think of.
Fuel screw out= no boost
Fuel screw in = Good boost but high EGT's and lots of smoke no matter where I set MBC.
What gives, when on nitrous smoke clears and Egt's are fine. And then it hit me,( I don't Have enough air going into this S.O.B).
Took off the Mickey mouse air intake I had on and spent a few hours building a new one. Used the same cone air filter and 3" pipe to 2-1/2 and then down to 1-3/4 turbo inlet.
Went for a drive and barely any smoke on 15psi boost and 200F cooler on EGT's. Been starving this poor ole 1.6 for air for over a year now!!!

There is a build thread here
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=11060.0 that shows a top mount with a Saab intercooler. This is exactly what I plan on doing. I like the idea of a fan I can switch on if I get stuck in traffic. I am not going with the hood scoops though. I am thinking just one louver with the slits facing backwards over the intercooler so it will scoop the air down at speed.
The scoops are just too much for me. I am thinking of something like this..
http://www.hrpworld.com/index.cfm?form_prod_id=3876&action=productI already have the intercooler, just need to relocate the battery and delete the washer reservoir.

They were close to the picture you listed, but more back towards the coolant/windshield washer tank, and it didn't have the cowling, it was just essentially a square hole in the hood.

i think louvers would look cool, from what i have read, most hood scoops do next to nothing for scooping in air, i'd put a nice heavy fan on that intercooler and seal it around the opening of the hood that way u no its sucking outside air through it.

i really like this cars intercooler setup as well, its kinda weird how much u don't notice it, and it supports 430whp haha. imagine racing somebody in a corvette or any fast car with a cabriolet that has 430whp. haha he told me it his speedo goes to 160mph, and he can pin it. met the guy at a car show
forgot to post the link haha

Right, I was planning on using some simple foam sheets around the ICso when the hood closes down it makes a quasi seal.
I was thinking about the fan though, would I just use a small sized radiator fan? Its 12v and water proof/resistant? Am I missing anything else I should be thinking about?
Also to the OP, love this build. Its the kinda stuff that inspires those of us gettin started on our toys.

Got a intercooler off e-bay a couple weeks ago and just installed it last friday. Dropped egt's about 200 degrees cruising on flat road.
Had to move the radiator over and reroute oil cooler lines. Got less than $200 in intercooler, piping. couplers and clamps.
Here's a few pics.

might wanna put some ducting around the IC to the front of the car. air will take the path of least resistance and its easier to go around the IC vs through it....
I'm sure some type of funnel shaped ducting would help channel more air through the intercooler, but I don't know if it would be worth the extra work to do so.
I might cover the gap on top and call it good. As it is now the pipe from intercooler to intake is cool right after shutdown.
Here's a view from the grill.
