Synthetic or not?

Is it worth it to go with synthetic oil over regular stuff? can you really run 15000 kms between oil changes?

We need more information on your part. What vehicle, mileage, driving conditions etc.

I run synthetic on a fresh rebuild but there are many differing opinions on the matter.

Have you tried searching the site for discussions on oil?

I wouldn't run 15000 kms on any oil personally I change mine around every 3000 miles or 5000km whichever comes first  ;)

I wouldn't run that long, maybe with a one of those really fine add-on oil filters. Problem is soot blows past the rings into the oil and if the filter doesn't catch it it'll keep getting pumped around until you drain it out.

Also the acids in old oil will add up and get corrosive unless you have to add enough oil to keep the neutralizer stuff in there. Pretty technical eh? I forgot the exact terms ::).
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

The only way I would do it is if you had signed up with one of the oil companies and they test it for free. Otherwise I wouldn't go more than 5,000 miles/change.

Mobil One is good for 25,000 miles on a change. I use this now, but change my Mobil One synthetic extended range filter (and the 1 quart in it) about every 7,000 miles. All my driving is 95% highway, min 45 minutes at a time. If you do a series of short trips, you will run into acid problems mentioned. But, if you regularly go min 20 minutes at highway speeds, the moisture and acid it forms will get boiled off.

For the two 7.3L power strokes I've owned, I used Mobil Delvac One, a fully synthetic commercial application diesel motor oil. It has indeffinate oil change life, if you have the Titian or similar oil analysis done. I did and changed the filter (and the 2 quarts it held) every 7,000 miles, had the oil tested every 14,000 miles and every test showed it was still in factory spec for everything. I did this for over 110,000 miles.

The car has 292000kms on it I deliver pizza with it mostly and do about 900-1100k a week, I do drive up to the airport for my "real" job daily and the round trip for that is 20kms on the highway. The car does not burn any oil and I get 5.5-5.7 L/100km regularly. Oh it is a 97 Jetta IDI with the fuel turned up and turbo switch bypassed.
