NEW VW made in China
« on: April 26, 2010, 09:37:36 pm »
Has anybody heard about the new VW made in China? The single-seater is capable of 0.91 litres per 100km (or 258mpg in the old measure) and can manage a top speed of 123km/h. Cost would equal $600.00 in US dollars. For a look at some of the pictures go to http://www.caradvice.com.au/25172/volkswagen-introduces-worlds-most-economical-car/

Looks like they're really going after the smart car niche with something that actually nets absurd mileage.

There seem to be some weird rumors flying about that car --
-$600 in China vs. $20-30k NA retail?  Where do the China retail price point numbers come from?
-Release date?
-Listed on VW's site

I bet they don't release it till gas is $5/Gal.  Size will turn off a lot of statesiders purchasing until there's a real reason to go for it.

Same reason M$ products in China cost a small fraction of what they do in N.A.  or Europe.   Market won't bear the cost.   I suspect no product liability, vehicle safety regulations, etc. also play a major part.   As shown it will never be street legal in North America.

I don't think you will be bringing home the trophy from this year's demolition derby.......

They wont sell them here. Too many people still drive oversized tank SUVs. They never would have repeat customers...because they would die.

The real "smart" cars in europe are powered albeit underpowered by diesel motors and do net pretty high mileage.

The little coupes smart makes on that side of the pond are pretty decent looking to.

There is a "discrepancy" in the information in the first link and the official VW site link provided by drrtybyl.   The VW link mentions regenerative braking and batteries, which to me sounds a bit like a hybrid, while the first link says it's not a hybrid.   I think VW's information is likely a little more accurate.

from what I gather, the regen brakes are just to lessen alternator load, not for hybrid drive.

Looks like they took some of the technology from their high MPG test vehicle.
 I really like the look.
They are talking about allowing 4-wheelers on the roads around here.

$5.00 a gallon?  We are at $4.90 now.  Last year it was $6.75.  High barrel price = high pump price  Low barrel price =  almost as high pump price

$5 USD pump price = $583498042 CAD pump price.

Some more info/speculation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VW_1L

But ya.. I doubt it will be made available in NA unless they increase the weight/size, which would make it considerably less efficient.

Yes, it looks like a slightly more streamlined
Messerschmidt. I wonder if the entry is through
the front of the car, or through a "canopy".
