Will a 86 jetta 1.6 diesel fit into a 80 rabbit 1.5 diesel body ? Are any modifications
required ? Is it easiest to swap with the trans still attached to engine ?

it'll fit once you get the mk1 injection pump bracket.  the pass side motor mount goes on the back of the block on mk2's and the mount is integral with the pump bracket on mk1's.
