So heres my intercooler from a early 90's diesel mitsubishi pajero.
I would like to know if anyone knows what the bottom tube on it is for? it doesn't go anywhere, its kinda in the way for what i am doing with it think i can take it off or does it do something important?

Was it connected to a bypass valve? I have an IC from an s13? nissan I think, right where the stock mounting location there is basically a tee, one 2" side to or from the motor and 1" side I presume for the stock bypass valve.

I dont think so, it looks like just a T that splits to a dead end. I never took it off the vehicle but i dont think there is anything like that.

oil drain?
Tom
Careful, that's a sore subject...
That is an air/air intercooler, right, not an air/water?

yea its just air to air, theres no fittings or valves connected to it so it cant be a drain.

If it's just a capped off tube it could be to reduce surge in a similar manner to a water hammer reducer thing used in residential plumbing? Giving a little room for air to compress without straining components. Is the mitsubishi pajero a gasser?

its a diesel intercooler, yea my guess was something to do with pressure surges or something. It hits my radiator overflow bottle when i put it where i want, so i would like to know if i can get rid of it.

I'm not sure why there would be a "surge protector" on a diesel, I thought the main concern was about the throttle body slamming shut and having nowhere for the pressure aside from a bov/bpv but this would provide some extra space for compressed air.
Considering I/we have never seen one like this I think you'd be safe to remove it. It looks like the IC is all alloy with no plastic end caps to blow apart?

Nice little cooler.
looks like you can get rid of anything but the in and out ..
Put it over the engine and use a subaru scoop .. works great...easy to plumb

not quite enough hood clearance in the samurai to go centered, gonna be offset to driver side not sure what type of scoop to use yet might make a custom one, i also found a 2000cfm 10" fan from perma-cool that will be a good upgrade in the near future.
