What is this AAZ pump?
« on: April 24, 2010, 03:52:07 pm »
Hi

I think my GTD pump is getting a little worn (1.25mm advance to keep the car running fine). I have found this pump, which is for an AAZ, but it is new VW exchange and a good price. Its got a few extra bits on it, and i'm wondering if I can fit my current GTD boost pin to it and it will perform like the old pump? PArt number is 028130107JX

Thanks
Will

That's a fine AAZ pump... non-Eco so it has a LDA, a microswitch on the throttle for emission control, and the usual AAZ early retard solenoid on the front.

What I really like.. and appears to be fairly rare... is that it's got a mechanical fast-idle link as opposed to the usual vacuum can.  Less hoses to run!

I suspect you can run your other boost pin (Burn will know for sure).   Leave the microswitch disconnected... or delete it entirely.  The early retard solenoid can be connected to the line from the stop solenoid or disconnected... whatever makes your car run better with your particular setup, timing, etc.

You should be able to run it :)

Vince, what function does the early retard solenoid serve? (other than make me chuckle) I have this on my AAZ IP and was wondering when/if to activate it, and what triggers it.

Thanks!

Thanks guys. Well i've bought it now.
I'm not sure if they just took the sealing caps off the injection ports for the picture. But if they have been off for a while would this cause any problems? The unit is new from VW but i'm not sure how long its been lieing around.

As far as fitting it, I guess what im doing is just swapping over the pump top cap and boost pin? I may run an extra switch to the car so I can turn the early retard on if I want.
Also interesting is the throttle micro switch. I'm not prepared at the moment but being an engineering student maybe I could figure out a way to apply it to VNT haha.

I'll be fitting the pump this summer, when I'll also probably take the head off again, sort out the ports, drill an EGT hole and sort out a boost controller. I'm keeping the watercooled K14 as it seems to spool up really nice (daily car) and its quite happy to pull until the governer kicks in.

Thanks for the help

There is a chance that the pump will leak depending on how old it is. While you have it out it might be a good idea to do the head o-ring and the advance seals.

Hi
If I want to fit this pump to my 1.6 GTD what do I need to do to the pump.

Is swapping the boost pin on this as easy as just taking the top and pin out of the old pump and putting it in this one?

Also I was reading about this AAZ pump needing AAZ injectors, is this true or will my current GTD injectors work normally.

Will the pumps mount the same and use the same pulley? Also what do I time the pump to. The current injectors are 155bar GTD Bosch exchange units with less than 10,000 miles on them.
Thanks

I think you will need to use the 1.9 pulley but I am not 100% on that. The pump will bolt up just fine.

You can use your GTD injectors. It's not "ideal" and you will have to tweak the lines but it'll work.

while testing a 1.6 pump I just resealed I installed it on my AAZ and found out that the aaz pulley would not work as the snout is shorter on 1.6 pump. 1.6 pump,1.6 pulley on AAZ the pulley ofset by 6mm with the cam. I know this is completely oppsite of what your attempting .I think you be ok with thin steel pump mount 1.6 as the AAZ has a thicker aluminan mount.

Thanks for the help. If using the GTD injectors is not ideal, then would my power be the same if I swapped in AAZ injectors? Also using AAZ injector pipes. The car currently is stock, I just want this new pump to perform the same as my GTD pump at the moment.
Basically the car would have a complete AAZ fuel setup but with the GTD boost pin in the new AAZ pump.

Will look out for an AAZ pulley.

Sorry to bring up this thread again, but I'm going to be changing the pump and putting ARP studs into the car soon. What I need to know is if this pump will perform the same as my 1.6 GTD pump, if I change over the pump boost pin. Also when the injectors are described as not 'ideal' what does this mean exactly? I realise the AAZ pump is designed for two stage injectors, however I have read that some early AAZs had single stage ones.

Basically I'm just looking to swap the pump over so it performs like the 1.6gtd one at the moment. I think the current gtd pump needs replacing because it needs 1.25mm of advance to have the car running and sounding like a normal 1.6td, compression is great, does this sound like typical wear of the pump?
Thanks!

hello everyone.

i have just the same pump shown on the picture , it has fast-slow idle arm connected to the cold start lever. and as far as i can see, that lever is not adjusted as it should be (i have not started the engine yet but i will be trying to start this weekend),  mechanical link was not even connected normally to the colt start lever when i bought the engine.

so could anyone help me with the info how to adjust  that mechanism (fast-slow idle arm and mechanical link). or could you give me the links where i can read about that

thank you in advance, vako :)

Do you have your injector's  break pressure set high?
