so my 1.6TD is running great.....when idle and when driving(having done much driving as i got to get so insurance on it before i really take her out!!)
anyways put a new pump on it and didnt run worth a hoot as the shop that did it timed the pump way to retarted.......(smoked,wouldnt stay running no etc....)
so my question is i kinda guessed but pushin the pump towards the block untill it ran better its 3/4 push forward and starts good runs good idles good but not knowing exactly where i am i dont know if i should have any concerns? cold start works fine
engine runs good in my oppinion but dont want to cause any unessesary damage,,,,,,,,i have a 1.9TD also and
this 1.6TD is def. alot more clankety. but i think the 1.6TD are though...
You can't really hurt a diesel with too much advance... It won't run well, won't get good mileage and will clatter like crazy but it won't detonate like a gasser and eat your engine.
The 1.9 uses dual stage injectors that are specifically designed to be quieter than the single stage injectors in a 1.6. The AAZ won't sound the same as a 1.6 when both are timed properly.
If it's running nice you're probably fine - that's what it really comes down to anyhow. Unless your engine, pump and injectors are brand new the factory timing is only "close" to what it should be... You can do it by ear and be quite successful!
hey guys
I haven'y had a great experience with advanced pump timing..... My car was running flawless then one fine day i decided to mess the timing

I pushed the pump towards the block, as far as it could go

Ran the car like that for 2 weeks and i started seeing white smoke from the exhaust:(
I pulled the pump back to its previous position(almost) but the damage had been done.....
then another fine day i decided to increase feuling, and when i was reversing the feuling back to normal, i broke the feul adjustment screw

and to stop the fuel leak, i stuffed the hole with silicone

which somehow went into the pump and ruined it

I got the pump redone from a local shop and i think the guy goofed up the pump timing from insde or something. the car never sounded the same and the engine condition kept deteriorating.... until it got to a point where my car was buring a litre of oil for every 10km.....
then i got the engine rebuilt along with the pump from an old specialized shop.... he did a good job... everything is good now:)
I wouldn't run it too advanced, there's no way all that clacking is good for anything.
Think about it, the piston is still going up and it fires? That's gonna be hard on stuff.
