The clusters are pretty much modular. You can swap around tachs, clocks and speedos pretty easy. I noticed the speedo tops out at 100 and has a 1600 above the MPH. If I remember right that number is its calibration. Notice the gassers read one number and some later gasser 16v equipped cars sometimes read a different number.  I bet thats just a regular Mk2 Jetta TD tach. The blue film is probably different as well..but the tach only needs a few wires that could be inserted into it through the film.

There is a way around everything...well..all but death and taxes.

I run a 86' gasser vanagon tach with a dakota digital box. works great for me but not all vanagon tach's take the dd signal. with your 86 van you might want to try a dd box. I have a spare one... pm me if your interested.

thanks for the info,
-this type of tach comes up on the other forums sometimes and i'm keep-in my eye open, if you know of something else please let me know
-the tach in the link probably came from a Mk2 jetta/golf TD and is in a syncro cluster(1600 calibration)
-i need the tach to go into a syncro mtdi, so i need the w signal tach and i have heard the dd may not work
thanks

I did mine with the tach from a '86 Jetta diesel. You need the one, as you noted, with the gas & temp gauge on the bottom, and "diesel 2.22" printed on the face. Very easy swap, once you find the right gauge. You have to pull the needle straight up off the hub; it may come off easy, it may not, just be careful. Simply hook the blue tach drive wire already in the van to the "W' terminal of the alternator, and you're good.
I took the opportunity while I had it open to paint all the needles day-glo orange, really makes them pop. 8)

Here's a .jpg of the center warning lite icon panel... you can print this out on acetate, cut one out and drop it in your cluster. The glow-plug trace is already present on the ribbon cable, if you choose to use it. Right-click & save to your pc, then print it out; it will be sized correctly.

Patience, young padawan. ;) I waited for about 3 months for one to show up. Make sure you check here & Samba every day, they go quick when they do pop up.
