need answer asap! injection pump timing.
« on: April 19, 2010, 04:33:40 pm »
i'm in the middle of injection pump timing and i think we finally got the proceedure down.

but we're having a conflicting reading oposed to what's actually going on with the car.

would being retarded make an engine noisey?

i'm getting between 50-60 mpg but my car is very noisey and smokes on start ups until warm.

i thought that it was really advanced as it was noisey and smoked.

but the reading i'm getting on the gauge is very retarded.

retarded could be noisey and white smoke. If you have the gauge see where you are at. Giles pump didn't need as much timing IIRC. I would think .90mm should be fine. I think that is about .036" If you don't have the gauge tap it gently toward the engine if you want to advance it. Hope it helps.

loosen the bolts slightly, start the engine, rotate the pump back and forth till it sounds better, turn it off and tighten bolts.

Restart a couple times to make sure it still fires good.

If you want to feel better check the timing after all that and see where it is.

Honestly most of the time I'll use the dial to get it set then if I dont like it I'll do the above procedure till I'm happy. Sometimes its retarded as per the gauge and sometimes not..

Either way I've never heard a "Noisy" engine with retarded timing.

our first base reading was at .027"
we got a few more readings of .029"

we moved it to .036" oddly enough  ;D

it completely stopped smoking and to our surpise, reduced alot of the clanking i was hearing.

we adjusted idle once the car was warm.

seems better now  ;)

how long does it last? Does it go away quickly? I would think blue-ish usually means oil, but could be left over fuel or a little much fuel at startup.
I guess how bad is it? Injectors wouldn't be a bad idea and I would check the compression if you have them out. How long have they been in service?

at idle, it will smoke or maybe 10 minutes, until warm.

or if i drive it right away, 2-3 mins. but it bucks alittle if i try to drive it before it gets warm.

where is the best place to get a diesel head gasket? is there an upgrade such as a steel gasket?
we noticed it was pour oil out the back of the head last night  :(  ::)

I would guess that if it is pouring out the back a little is seaping into a cylinder and burning blue. At least until it is warm and can burn it or the heat seals it a little more.
I got a multi layered steel off of Myke_W he is a mod on the english side of the site. If you have a 12mm hydrualic head and block it is a 100% drop in upgrade...if it is a mechanical block there is work to be done.

well im gonna contradict what i said before alittle bit cause i took it out for a test drive.

i started it up, it was smoking. and then i took off right away. no bucking like last time. and when i stopped at the end of the street (200 feet) the smoke was gone. which is very unusual cause normally i'd smoke all the up the next street.

obviously still need to replace the head gasket, but seems like it's better.

.036 in = 0.9144 millimeters

I'd go up to .95mm (0.95 millimeter = 0.037") and see what happens. I've had real retarded timing before and it was white smoke, most likely the blue is caused be by timing rather than buring oil.

How does it start? Cranks a while or fires right up? Does it belch a little cloud of black?
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

you could try that. I though Giles pumps didn't need too much static timing, but you can play and see. I wouldn't get too picky as it will probably change as soon as you take the head off to put a new gasket in.

i might not even need to change the gasket, i was made aware yesterday that there were suppose to be to retightening of the head bolts after instalation.
and we did not. so we're gonna check 'em tonight, and see if it stops leakin' out the back.

did you use studs or factory bolts? Bolts may need retorqued but anytime I have had issues with the head gasket I haven't been lucky enough to do the final twist and have it go away. You may not have my luck though.

Almost always, oil leaks at the back of the head are actually from the valve cover gasket not being seated correctly and just appear to be a head gasket issue.

i'll take a look  :-*
