retarded could be noisey and white smoke. If you have the gauge see where you are at. Giles pump didn't need as much timing IIRC. I would think .90mm should be fine. I think that is about .036" If you don't have the gauge tap it gently toward the engine if you want to advance it. Hope it helps.
I would guess that if it is pouring out the back a little is seaping into a cylinder and burning blue. At least until it is warm and can burn it or the heat seals it a little more.I got a multi layered steel off of Myke_W he is a mod on the english side of the site. If you have a 12mm hydrualic head and block it is a 100% drop in upgrade...if it is a mechanical block there is work to be done.
Almost always, oil leaks at the back of the head are actually from the valve cover gasket not being seated correctly and just appear to be a head gasket issue.
