The muffler story........er whatever
« on: April 18, 2010, 07:07:46 pm »
So after pulling my vnt off, I discovered what a good job they do at quieting the exhaust. It was then 2.5" straight.......I think I lost some of my hearing.

After being told by a polite trooper that my car was waaaay too loud, I ordered a 2.5" welded thrush muffler from napa and waited......and waited, and decided to take matters into my own hands.

So I went to the local muffler shop and got a used scrap of 5" pipe, took off the "now 2.5 inch" toilet bowl DP and perforated a foot long section of it, put the 5" pipe over it and welded on some ends. So I had a free flowing "muffler". I continued to lose my hearing, but it totally killed the exhaust resonance that happened at 2800rpm. That was nice.

The muffler I ordered, after the factory finally cranked a few more out, arrived. It baaaarely fit between the spare tire well and lower shock mount, less than 1/4" on each side so if it wiggles at all it'll probably start vibrating on stuff. It is also visible from the back.

It's much quieter, though it still drones some.

The very best fix I've decided, would be to get my turbo rebuilt and slap it back on there. That would eliminate my homemade "muffler" since I have a different DP for the turbo, but it would make it almost silent......at least to me, after driving without a muffler for so long........
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
