Transmission swap?
« on: April 18, 2010, 10:41:16 am »
I was wondering if the 5 speed boxes are all interchangeable?  I have a 90 Jetta GL TD and the final drive bearings are hooped.  I haven't had it off yet, but I can lay my hands on any number of gas 5 speeds that have good gear boxes, and was hoping to just swap out the stock with a gas one.  I know the gearing is a bit different, but I could probably deal with that.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Great site BTW

A lot of the transmissions will interchange although there are some different axle flange sizes and things to work out. What transmission do you have now? Take a look at this site http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ for more info.

Thanks for the link!  I believe I have an AWY.  I will have the car up on ramps tomorrow and will confirm, but I'm all but positive.  I guess the main difference is in the flange right?  The bell housings are all the same?  Like I said, I can access several 86-94 Jettas and Golfs with gas engines.  I'm hoping to have my pick of the litter.

Thanks.

all 020 transmissions will bolt up to your four cylinder.

and the output flanges can be swapped to whatever your axles are.

The rear mount is different between mk1, 2 and 3. Just another thing to make sure of.

Here's where there's some pics, http://www.brokevw.com/020mount.html
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Thanks guys!  That solves a big problem very well.

While I'm here, is pulling the cast iron "distributor" block off the injector line end of the fuel pump going to give me much grief?  I seem to be leaking at that point.  I was wondering if I might get away with replacing the seal with the pump in place.  (I hate setting the timing!)

I have a couple hundred more questions, but I'll stick to 2 per day!

Thanks again for the replies.  And for the treasure trove of info here!  This site is a great find.

I had the same problem (fuel pump) so I pulled apart one I had on the shelf to see what I was going to get into. My advice:  DON"T DO IT!  Pump is still in pieces. There's guys on the board that say there's a way to do it in the car (it's an o-ring that's leaking) but I know I won't attempt it. I'll send the pump out first, and I've had cummins pt pumps and lucas cav pumps apart before that are now running vehicles that I have. VE bosch pumps are a different ball game..................

That's what I thought.  I figure I need to re-nozzle the injectors as well, so I might as well have NW do the whole works.

Cheers!

I'm lovin' this site man!!!

you dont need bigger nozzles, VW nozzles will flow way more than enough fuel.

This is true.  I plan to keep everything stock save the exhaust and intake.  I am working towards better economy with as much performance as possible.  I get 4.8L/100 as it is right now, but I think it can be improved.

Thanks for the advice.

a small turbo will add some mileage if you dont already have one. and lots of performance. you dont have to even up your fueling. just add boost and it will come alive.

This seems to be the consensus.  I seem to be catching the tweaking bug since discovering this forum a few days ago.  My first priority is to install a boost gauge and an EGT gauge. (I have read the Aircraft Spruce thread thoroughly)  When I drill out the manifold for the thermocouple, I will re-gasket the intake/exhaust as well just to be sure.  It looks like one of the intake ports blew a gasket out at some point, and the banjo fitting on the turbo for the waste-gate line is stripped and is probably leaking pressure. Lots of little bugs to squash.  None that look too pricey though.

I bought the Jetta 6 years ago as a beater car for work.  Got it cheap with a blown HG and 265'000 K on the clock.  I had to drive 150 K a day and she kept my fuel bill way down!  Never really expected it to last, but with a little care she has been a workhorse!  Just passed 464'000 K the other day.  Gonna give her the TLC she deserves.

Cheers!

Dave.

If you're going to go through with a trans swap, I would highly recommend using a gasser trans like the ACN. I had a 4S on my 1.6 and switched it for an ACN. I finished it yesterday and took it for a drive today. WWAAAYYY better on the highway. I can now cruise at 120 km/h with the engine purring whereas with the diesel trans it was screaming at 100km/h. The gear ratios are better for city driving as well.

@Turftech
I see now that you are somewhat local to me.  If you want the diesel tranny, I have a 4S that I would gladly part with.  Hit me up for details if you are interested.  However, I agree with rallydiesel,  I have two of the 4S, and the only reason that I want to hang on to either is to swap the 5th gear into a gasser tranny, when I find one cheap.  I want to get the RPM down, before I blow the poor thing up.  Low gearing at low speed doesn't suit me at all, I'm looking for a good highway set-up.

I should have mentioned that I had pretty much settled on exactly what you guys recommend!  I am on an ACN hunt now.  Finding one before it has been snatched is going to be the trick.  Still, expect a message shortly Runt.  Might need the 4S anyway as a stop gap.  Mine is pretty wrecked.

BTW, hooked up a boost gauge (of sorts) and see I'm pushing ~8 psi at WOT.  Good to see things are working fairly right prior to any modifications.  I even got the enrichment screw setup nice!  (Amazing considering how out of whack it was)  But I am going to wait on an EGT gauge before going totally tweaky.  The FAQ awaits.  It's great to have all the research done for me!  All I have to do is make it happen.   ;)

Cheers for the advice!
