3 foot pry bar to time a 1.6TD pump???
« on: April 17, 2010, 12:31:03 pm »
i am no expert but should you need to use a 3 foot pry bar to pry pump away from the motor to set the pump timing??
like i thought just little moves makes a big differnce,,,,,,

like if you had to pry the pump as far away from the motor as a pry bar would let you would it not be rediculouly retarted in timing????

if it was really really retarted would the cold start lever have no effect?  also when a 1.6TD is really retarted couild this cause alot of smoke and loss of power>

Cheers,

James

You should only move the pump by hand. If you need to move the pump further from the engine than you can by hand, you need to move the belt over a tooth. Otherwise you are just bending the hardlines and eventually damaging the pump housing/mounting bolts.

The cold start lever will always effect the timing, the cold start mechanism is internal so the position of the pump won't effect it. The CS knob only advances a couple degrees so at really bad timing it may not be able to bring the timing into spec.

Retarded timing will easily mess up the power and cause smoke.

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
