oil control rings

While I was setting up the Grant oil control ring in my motor, the piston just slid down the cylinder and the oil control ring hit the ground and split into 2 pieces. I have the Mahle oil control rings that came with the the oversized pistons and was wondering if there is that much of difference in the two oil control ring designs?
I notices that the Grant oil control rings just cleared .010in and the Mahle just cleared .016. I know both are within spec, but I will be using the Grant 1st and 2nd ring, I just don't know if I should be using the Mahle oil control ring or should I order another set of Grant rings so I could use there oil control rings.
Please Help!

I would just measure them all and see which one has the best fitment and go with it. The oil rings on the Mahle I have heard aren't that bad.

Hi,
If you don't mind me asking; how are you, [or anyone] finding those currently discounted Grant rings? I'm about to order some. Postage to the UK is crippling, but even so , if they are fine, then still far cheaper than UK stuff...
Thanks.

Thanks, but I managed to get an extra oil control ring through Grant. It was mailed out today, otherwise I would've purchase a set from you.

So what's the quality like?
Do they need filing to get to spec?
Thanks

The rings are great quality. The first ring end gap was right at the minimum. The second ring I have to file to make it to the minimum. Also, the second ring has a unique undercut bevel shape to it. The oil control ring end gap was right at the minimum. Compared to the Mahle rings that came with the pistons, the 1st ring looked the same. The Mahle second ring was a standard shape ring, just like the 1st ring. The Mahle oil control ring didn't seem as robust as the Grant ones. The spring tension of the oil control ring on the Mahle was slightly less than the Grant, also the end gap on the Mahle was right at the maximum. Hope this helps, this is all that I can compare them too.

Agreed.. I've installed several sets of Grant rings.. Always well within spec, and so far they've been holding up great... I have them in both of my Rabbits.. About 140,000 miles (225,000kms?) on one and around 195,000 miles (315,000kms?) on the other.. Neither engine has been re bored so there was some cylinder wear to begin with, but oil consumption has been next to nothing and compression is about 450psi (31 bar) as well...
