81 gas auto rabbit truck to turbo diesel
« on: April 13, 2010, 01:02:49 pm »
 Hi,
I just bought this truck as a fixer as it has oil in the radiator reservoir . I am thinking that is a blown head gasket or a cracked block or a cracked head . Be fore I take it apart ....I want to do a leak down test on it before it is torn down. If it too bad to fix and too expensive to fix ....I am wondering if would be better to convert it to diesel with a complete long block ?
What would it take in parts to convert? Should I get better mileage then the gas motor ? Can the diesel use the existing auto tranny ? Thanks , Glyn

you should post this in the IDI section, that deals with IDI engines. just because an engine has a turbo, does not mean it is a TDI.

IDI - Indirect injection
TDI - direct injection

Technically it's:

IDI - Indirect injection
DI - direct injection
TDI - turbocharged direct injection

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
