just wondering if anyone on here is running a lightened flywheel on there tdi, (ALH) thinking about having a friends lightened, or possibly doing it myself if possible and then sending it out for re-balancing afterwards.

I've heard a few comments about rough idle & difficult clutch engagement with too much taken off, 10-14lb range.

okay so seems that some of you on here are running them

, on the ALH flywheel, there is a heavy steel band welded to the outside of the flywheel, is that the weight to be machined in question, as i dont really see many good places for extra weight to removed from

I'm using a 228mm TDI single mass FW for my build FWIW.

No. The VR6 FW has 8 bolt holes, but is a 228mm FW. You want a G60 FW or any '99-'05 four cylinder, its still a 228mm FW.
The bolt patteren is the same for the 4 cylinder engine, 1975 Rabbit to 2005 GTI 1.8t.

I have ran down to a 17lb flywheel. I don't like much lower than that. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have the clutch and the flywheel balanced if you shave it. What was said above is not true when you have as much torque as we do! PS- some aftermarket flywheels are not balanced!

why would you have to have the clutch balanced if you never did anything to it?

Because they dont leave the factory balanced, and can be quite far from balanced. Ideally you would balance the whole bottom end assembly, including the clutch. Its all part of the same spinning mass after all.
