Engine Rebuild coming together slowy
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:32:24 am »
Well, I just had my block cleaned and measured, going to need to go .20 over for pistons.  The machinist ordered mahle pistons.  Are the pistons rings that come with this adequate?  Should I use Grant piston rings?   Also, he ordered some kolby intermediate shaft bearings and will install them.  I held out on the rod and main bearings, because they were kolby brand, I wanted the multi-piece thrust bearing, but he cannot get glyco from his supplier.  Where is a good place to purchase Glyco rod and main bearings?  Also, is it ok to reuse the rod and main bolts.  I already have ARP head bolts waiting to be installed.  Further, this is a NA engine if that helps.

He is a mod on this site has the mains you want.

Some rod bolts you can reuse some not. ALL head bolts are throw away.

Yes they should be. The mains that is are just regular old 10.9 Hex head cap screws.

I went with a set of Mahle (Brazilian) pistons in an N/A block this last year. The pistons came bare so I opted for Goetz rings. The Goetz rings sealed without a hitch (proper break-in technique) and I never regretted the little amount of extra money....very glad I did, actually. The Mahle's have a very bland appearance (maybe even sort of Homer Simpson-ish), but the engine sure hauls well!
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

Well, I went to pick up my engine today, only to find out that the only thing done was a hot tanking, THAT's IT!  I waited for a couple of days for the machinist to bore/hone the block, and install the ID bearings.  Well, he didn't.  The guy who took in my engine said he has been doing this work for over 25 years.  Well, the guy said his machine cannot bore deep enough and his machinist didn't come today.  What a bunch of crock!  Doesn't make sense. My engine was taken apart and hot tanked, but while loading my truck with the block, I had to ask the guy for my other items that came with the block, like my crankshaft.  He just gave me a bucket with all of my items.  I had to sort through them to make sure all items were there.  Well, all items weren't there, so I ask him for this and that, and magically, the items reappeared in another container!  I am going  to another machine shop, but this time I am bringing in the items separately and slowly building up my motor, just in case something else is missing, it gives me time to source parts,  this sucks, I am never recommending this place to anyone in southern california.  The only thing that was a deal were the oversized .020 Mahle pistons with rings that I got for $170.
