82 Caddy 1.6 NA help
« on: March 31, 2010, 12:07:05 pm »
Hello,
My name is matt i live in eastern PA. I'm new to the VW diesel thing and new to this sight so bare with me if you will. I grew up around my dad's truck shop so my mechanical knowlege is somewhat strong i just don't know all the VW abriveations and such.

Anyway about a month ago i picked up an 82 caddy 1.6 diesel. got it in the shop, did brakes all the way around, welded in a new shock tower because of major rust issues, same goes for the left and right floor pans, replaced both V belts and fixed some minor electrical issues.

when i hit the road for the first time i was shocked by how slow the thing was. drove it around a few days then turned up the fuel screw a little. runs much better and i can actully keep up with traffic now. not to mention the smoke i can pour when the pedal is on the floor.

now down to business. i want more power! i found a turbo kit for it. seems to be the only complete kit around http://www.dieselvw.com/16TurboConversion.htm?gclid=CJS1p_HU46ACFSBbiAodni_GCg     $450 isn't too bad. anybody worked with one of these before? i cant remember where i read something about a different crank gear to advance the timing a little bit. any word on that? is it even worth the hasstle trying to work this thing or should i just start over with a tdi motor or something?

any help much appriciated

You will also need a streetoys200 race pipe to install a filter assy or intercooler

Maybe a AAZ intake tube, Ebay 50.00

And a K&N filter assy with L bracket to secure ( I can help )

You will need a  oil psi feed line and drill and tap for a return line also for the block or pan

We are all here to help ...

I would rather you got a exhaust manifold and intake from someone here and find a used T3 or T3 core and get a basic OHC unit from GPOPSHOP.com for 395.00

So you might get into the manifolds for 150.00 used (pair )

P.s. I just started making the 1.6 TD /AAZ intake  Duct , silicone for 27.50 with s/s clamps

thanks for the input.

I'm not worried about an air filter essy. i was planning on fabricating my own out of stainless steel.

So your saying to look for tdi manifolds? and which ones will match up to my block?

and what exactly is a T3 turbo? and what is the difference between that and the turbo from dieselvw.com?

sorry for all the specific questions. again i appriciate the help

i found a turbo kit for it. seems to be the only complete kit around http://www.dieselvw.com/16TurboConversion.htm?gclid=CJS1p_HU46ACFSBbiAodni_GCg

That particular vendor is well known... infamous... um.... well, search for "Prothe" and form your own opinion.

I'd also caution you that that kit is *not* complete... it's missing a bunch of stuff besides the oil lines... air filter, proper downpipe, turbo oil pan, boost hose and fitting for a boost-enabled injection pump.

If you keep searching here you should find quite a few threads discussing what's needed to turbo a non-turbo car... have a hunt and then see what questions you still have.
