arp tdi head stud part number?
« on: April 01, 2010, 12:08:00 am »
hey guys, I have heard about the new tdi ARP head studs that apparently are much more robust than the cosworth studs I am currently using.

it seems that Kerma TDI is the only supplier of them, and there are very few actual reviews of them other than what Kerma has to say.
the kerma site is so poorly laid out, I am not sure whether I want to buy from them or not...

now, Techtonics is selling a set of diesel headstuds for $50 less than kerma, with a part number of 103 102D, which is not the ARP cosworth number.

Kerma does not list the ARP part number, so I am wondering, could the studs that TT is selling be the new TDI ones?

I am much more ready to buy a set from TT than Kerma, I just want to confirm the part number first.

so does anyone know the ARP part number for the new TDI headstuds?

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

yeah, thats the TT site, and the part number there does not match the ARP cosworth studs, but that does not mean they are the same as the tdi studs that kerma is selling.

I am looking for part numbers to tell which the ones TT is selling are

I emailed ARP and they don't any specific studs for tdi's. They sent me a measurement diagram so they could recommend some that would work.

I swear they are not for TDI's...I think they were for some cummins or something and kerma put them into a kit. I could be wrong, but that is what I am remembering. It is the better stuff with approx. 10,000 psi more strength, but I still don't think ARP is making it exclusively for the TDI's

I heard that too, but Kerma is not particularly forthcoming about the details of the kit.
they say that they have a deal with ARP to be the sole seller, but that does not sound like ARP to me.

so what are the ones TT is selling?
they dont match the cosworth part number(the kit being sold for the 1.6/1.9 diesel)

I guess I will have to try calling them sometime, just not sure when I will get the chance...

Order Desk & Technical Support: 800.826.3045 or 805.339.2200

the studs TT is selling are listed as PN 103 102D

whereas the cosworth studs(what we are being sold as disel VW ones) are PN 251-4701

dimensionally anything that matches the cosworth specs would work, so if they have some studs for another app(like a cummins) that are the same thread and length, but stronger that would be preferable.

if the Kerma ones are indeed a cummins stud re-packaged(due to a different number of bolts in the kit) I bet we could get enough interest here to warrant buying a number of kits and then packing them to have the right number of bolts, thus eliminating kerma(and a large amount of markup I am sure)

thanks for being willing to call them for me.

Talked to them...they don't have anything "stock" that matches in the ARP 2000 or ARP custom H.
They do have studs that measure 5.75" in both grades. The cosworth studs are 5.4"
the part # for the ARP 2000 that are 5.75" long with the 12mm-1.75 thread is = AU5.750-2LB cost per stud = 21.00
same but  ARP Custom H   part # is AU5.750-10LB     cost per stud=55.00

Custom H = 260,000PSI
ARP 2000 = 220,000PSI

He also let on that if someone (Kerma) is having them custom made he won't tell. We can also get some custom made, but would cost a small fortune to do so. He didn't say how much that was. Now that I researched all this I can go to my buddy that has a machine shop and makes studs for motocycle engines give him the specs and he could make some cheaper than that. But I will have to wait on him to have time.

ouch! thats lots of money for either option!
(does that cost cover washers and nuts, or just the stud?)

I dont have any need for these any time soon, so I will patiently wait for your buddy to come up with something...

thanks again for calling.

now, back to paying attention to my professor :P

The prices were with washer and nut...which was about 5.00 per stud. I don't know what I can do with my buddy's machine shop. I think he should be able to, but he cuts the thread instead of rolling it. I will still look into it.
