AAF Timing Question
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:34:11 am »
I know this isn't a diesel question but I'm hoping someone may have some experience with this.  I'm in the process of semi-rebuilding the 2.5 AAF gas in my 92 euro camper van and I'm having a hard time understanding the timing marks on this thing. It's an automatic and the Bentley says that the timing mark on the flywheel is between the "O" and the "T". When I have the #1 piston up to what I think is top dead center (from viewing from underneath with the oil pan off) all I'm seeing on the flywheel is an "O"
Is this right or is there a "O and a T" somewhere and I'm just not seeing it. The markings on the flywheel aren't the clearest - or at least for me to see.
Thanks, any advice appreciated.

They are a pain to work on but... the mark you are looking for should be an O with a faint line through it [i'm sure you won't the line ] and TDC should be when only the top of the O is showing at the bottom of the squarish whole on the bell housing. If you get it close and spot the O mark, slowly move it down until you only see the top half of the mark. Hope that makes sense.

Yup - that is exactly it. Ends up I was in to much of a hurry when reading the bently, the "O" and "T" are for the manual trans vehicles. The auto's only have an "O"

First the hair now the eye site - I don't even want to think about whats going to go next!

Thanks man.....
