reasons for and against using a 1.9head with the 1.6 bottom?
« on: March 11, 2010, 02:21:33 pm »
just wondering, seems to me the major thing is they are newer and easier to find in good shape.

but in terms of performance, are we looking at any gains? i found a nice rebuilt shortblock, just wondering what i should do for a head

lowers compression and way way way better intake ports.  and some have 7mm valve stems

Lower compression may make for harder winter starts, but will be more efficient.  If you use the 1.9 head you need to get a 1.9 or TDI intake manifold as the port shape is different than the 1.6.

I don't think you need to, but it would definitely be a good idea. Especially if you are running more then stock boost.

Yup it's a performance thing, it would be useless if running NA and would be harder to start to boot.

Running TD you'll get more power with less boost, compared to a 1.6 head.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
